Grind and use the finest powder. It works well with Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma). It can be used half raw and half stir-fried. There are two types: Heichou (Black Morning Glory Seed) and Baichou (White Morning Glory Seed).
Bitter, cold, slightly toxic. It specifically eliminates edema and is most effective in promoting urination and defecation. It resolves all types of Qi stagnation and drives out various phlegm-fluids. It reduces abdominal fullness and attacks accumulations, and can induce abortion.
It grows everywhere. It climbs as a vine; its leaves resemble those of Vigna unguiculata (Cowpea) but have three tips. There are black and white varieties.
For all types of stagnant Qi and undigested food retention, take four liang of the finest powder. Hollow out a Raphanus sativus (Radish), place the medicine inside, steam until cooked, add one qian of Baikou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) powder, and make pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds.
Take twenty pills each time. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For constipation, grind half raw and half cooked into powder, and take with ginger decoction. (No. 2.)
For sudden onset of edema and abdominal distension, take two qian of the finest powder of both Heichou and Baichou, mix with white flour to make a cake, roast and eat it. Do not use for deficiency patterns. (No. 3.)
For edema with difficult urination, take the finest powder, five fen each time, same method as above. (No. 4.)
For infantile edema, make pills from the finest powder and take orally. Specifically for cases with obstruction of both urination and defecation. (No. 5.)
For facial freckles, grind into powder, mix with egg white, apply topically, and wash off in the morning. (No. 6.)
For infantile nocturnal crying, grind into powder and apply to the umbilicus. (No. 7.)
For hematuria and strangury, grind into powder, take two qian with ginger water. (No. 8.)
Regardless of whether it is Qi drum or Water drum, use the same method as Formula No. 3. Do not use for deficiency patterns. (No. 9.)
Duoming San (Life-Saving Powder): Heichou and Baichou (each stir-fried and ground), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Binglang (Arecae Semen) (equal parts).
Take five fen each time with honey water. Treats infantile Mapi Feng (Horse Spleen Wind), acute convulsions, lung distension with wheezing and fullness, elevated chest with rapid breathing, retracted hypochondrium with flaring nostrils, distressing chaotic cough, irritability, thirst, and phlegm. (No. 10.)
Zhouche Wan (Boat Cart Pill): Heichou (four liang), Sheng Jun (Raw Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, two liang), Gansui (Kansui Radix, one liang, baked in dough), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, one liang), Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix, one liang, baked in dough), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos, one liang, processed with vinegar), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, one liang), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, five qian), Binglang (Arecae Semen, one qian), Qingfen (Calomelas, one qian).
Make pills the size of soybeans. Take three qian each time; stop when bowel movements occur three times. If ineffective, increase the dose. Indicated for all types of edema where both the physical condition and pulse are excess patterns. (No. 11.)
