Remove the head and double leaves, soak in water, and use after drying. It is incompatible with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Potentillae Anserinae Rhizoma et Radix (Yelangdu, 野狼毒), and Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, 山茱萸). Avoid consuming raw vegetables and civet meat. It fears Natrii Sulfas (Xiaoshi, 硝石) and Talcum (Huashi, 滑石), and is antagonistic to Veratri Radix (Lilu, 藜芦).
Pungent, warm, non-toxic, with an ascending nature. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. It expels wind from the head and stops coughing, treats toothache and unblocks qi mechanism, drives out cold-dampness and clears turbidity, eliminates fluid retention and breaks phlegm. It cures epileptic wind disorders, resolves rheumatic bi-pain, harmonizes spasms of all joints, and moistens dry stool constipation. When using Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛), do not use Dysosma Veinedii Rhizoma (Duheng, 杜衡). The one with soft stems, fine straight roots, purple color, and extremely pungent taste is Asari Radix et Rhizoma. The one with slightly coarse stems, curved yellowish-white roots, and pungent taste is Dysosma Veinedii Rhizoma. The one with roots similar to Asari Radix et Rhizoma, color like Dysosma Veinedii Rhizoma, and pungent-bitter taste is Imperatae Rhizoma (Guidu'you, 鬼督邮). It grows everywhere, but those from Huayin and Korea are considered authentic; their roots are fine and extremely pungent. Currently, Dysosma Veinedii Rhizoma is often used as a fake. Asari Radix et Rhizoma has leaves resembling Malva verticillata, reddish-black in color; if not this, it is Dysosma Veinedii Rhizoma.
