[Indications] Fetal restlessness causing vaginal bleeding (Lou Tai).
Conditions of spermatorrhea, intestinal wind with bloody dysentery, and bloody diarrhea. It is an essential medicine for obstetric and gynecological disorders and also a good remedy for surgery.
It grows in valleys everywhere. The stem has four edges, resembling Boehmeria nivea (Ramie), with leaves growing opposite each other. It flowers in April, resembling Leonurus japonicus (Motherwort) flowers, and its root resembles Cirsium japonicum (Da Ji). Since the Han Dynasty, people have mistakenly used Cirsium japonicum (Da Ji) as Dipsaci Radix (Xu Duan), an error that has persisted for a long time. Furthermore, those that are reddish in color, slender, and emit dust-like powder when broken are considered superior; those produced in Sichuan are the best.

Grows in Qiaoshan Valley, and is found in Caozhou, Yanzhou, east of Bianjing, as well as Qinzhou and Haizhou. The foliage resembles Sesamum indicum (Sesame), growing six or seven chi high, turning black and withered like lacquer in late autumn.
Harvest the aerial parts when young; harvest the roots in August.
