生用止嗽，熟用入补。苁蓉为使，恶葳蕤，胜乌头。

出齐山、代郡、辽东等处，河东、陕西、越杭亦有之。苗引赤蔓于高木，叶尖圆似杏叶。

四月开黄白花，类莲花。七月成实，丛生茎端。今有二种，有南北之分，南产者色红，北产
者色黑，用滋补必用北产者良。亦可取根种之，当年就旺；若二月种子，次年乃旺。
赤游风丹，渐渐肿大，为末服之。（验方第一。）
烂弦风眼，同荆子煎汤洗。（第二。）
女人阴冷，五味子四两为末，口中玉泉合丸，纳阴中。（第三。）
五更肾泻，五味子二两，吴茱萸半两，炒末，每旦陈米汤下。（第四。）

久咳不止，佐甘草、五倍子、风化硝，末，干含咽。（第九。）
久咳肺胀，同粟壳蜜丸弹子大，每煎服一丸。（第十。）

处处有之。四五月红熟，状如覆盆。味酸甘，大如樱桃，软红可爱。又曰，色黑乌耳。
红者乃 田 也，不入药。

Soak in wine, steam and sun-dry several times, then pound into powder for use. *Dioscoreae Rhizoma* (Shanyao, 山药) serves as a guiding herb.
Pungent, sweet, non-toxic. Enters the three Yin meridians of the foot (Foot-Taiyin Spleen, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney, Foot-Jueyin Liver). Strengthens Yin, benefits essence, dispels wind, and brightens the eyes. Eliminates cold pain in the waist and knees, and stops dribbling urination. Assists sinews and vessels, boosts Qi and strength, resolves dryness-thirst, and stops white turbidity (white cloudy discharge from the urethra).
For chronic Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst syndrome, characterized by polydipsia, polyphagia, polyuria, and emaciation), decoct and drink at will until symptoms cease. (Verified Formula No. 1.)

Benefits the Kidney and replenishes essence; take with *Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata* (Shudi, 熟地) prepared as wine pills. (No. 3.)
White turbidity and spermatorrhea; take with *Poria* (Fuling, 茯苓) and *Lotus Seed* (Lianrou, 莲肉) as pills. (No. 4.)
Red turbidity, dry mouth, vexation, and heat; take with *Ophiopogonis Radix* (Maidong, 麦冬) as honey pills. (No. 5.)
Waist and knee pain; take with *Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix* (Niuxi, 牛膝) as wine pills. (No. 6.)
Liver injury causing dim vision; soak in wine, powder it, and take as pills made with egg white. (No. 7.)
Sudden swelling of the body and face, with a surging pulse; soak in wine and take regularly. (No. 8.)

Raw use stops coughing; cooked use tonifies deficiency. *Cistanches Herba* (Congrong, 肉苁蓉) is a guiding herb; adverse to *Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma* (Weirui, 葳蕤); overcomes the toxicity of *Aconiti Lateralis Radix* (Wutou, 乌头).
Sour, slightly bitter, slightly salty, non-toxic. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Astringes Lung Qi, nourishes Kidney, boosts Qi, generates fluids; tonifies deficiency, brightens eyes, strengthens Yin, and astringes essence. Calms wheezing and coughing, stops vomiting and diarrhea, removes vexation and thirst, and eliminates edema. Do not use if cough is in its early stages with a rapid pulse indicating fire.
Produced in Qishan, Daijun, Liaodong, etc.; also found in Hedong, Shaanxi, Yuehang. The vine draws red tendrils onto high trees; leaves are pointed and round, resembling apricot leaves. In the third and fourth lunar months, yellow-white flowers bloom, resembling lotus flowers. Fruit matures in the seventh month, growing in clusters at the stem tips. Currently, there are two types, distinguished by North and South origins. Southern produce is red; Northern produce is black. For tonification, the Northern variety is superior. Roots can be planted; they flourish in the same year. If seeds are sown in the second lunar month, they flourish the following year.
Chi You Feng Dan (acute skin disease with red, migrating patches that gradually swell); take as powder. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
Rotting margin wind-eye (blepharitis with ulcerated eyelid margins); decoct with *Schizonepetae Spica* (Jingjie, 荆芥) or related herbs and wash. (No. 2.)
Female genital coldness; four liang of *Schisandrae Fructus* (Wuweizi, 五味子) powdered, mixed with saliva (Yuquan, 玉泉) in the mouth to form pills, inserted into the vagina. (No. 3.)
Kidney diarrhea at dawn (five-watch diarrhea); two liang of *Schisandrae Fructus*, half a liang of *Evodiae Fructus* (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸), stir-fried and powdered; taken every morning with aged rice soup. (No. 4.)

Chronic cough unceasing; combine with *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Gancao, 甘草), *Myrobalani Fructus* (Wubeizi, 五倍子), and *Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus* (Fenghua Xiao, 风化硝), powder them, hold in mouth dry and swallow slowly. (No. 9.)
Chronic cough leading to Lung distension; combine with *Papaveris Pericarpium* (Susuke, 粟壳) as honey pills the size of marbles; decoct and take one pill each time. (No. 10.)

Found everywhere. Ripens red in the fourth and fifth lunar months, shaped like an inverted basin. Taste is sour and sweet, size like a cherry, soft and red, lovely to behold. It is also said that the black ones are "Wu'er" (black ear), which are not used medicinally. The red ones are *Rubiae Fructus* (Tianye, likely referring to a specific variety or misidentification in text, usually *Rubiae Fructus* is Fupenzi), not entering medicine.
