It grows near Changshan and along the waters of Shangdang. Flowers are harvested in the twelfth lunar month. Those from Goryeo and Baekje have large flowers resembling chrysanthemums. Some grow in northern Shu, in the streams of Yongzhou, and in the ravines of Mount Hua. The leaves resemble Malva verticillata (Kui) but are larger, growing in clumps, with flowers emerging from below the roots. Those grown in Guanzhong have purple roots; the leaves resemble Dioscorea hypoglauca (Bixie); they flower in the twelfth lunar month with green, yellow, or purple calyces, emerging one to two inches above the soil, initially resembling chrysanthemums. Harvested on the first day of the first lunar month. Currently, people may counterfeit it with pistils of loquat (Pipalei), which must be known.

The stem is three to four chi high; the leaves are as large as alfalfa, small at the base and broad at the tip, opening during the day and closing at night, sticking together in pairs. In autumn, it opens pale yellow five-petaled flowers and produces pods like young cowpeas, five to six cun long, containing dozens of seeds connected irregularly, shaped like horse hooves, green in color, which are the best for eye preparations. The other is Jiangmeng Jueming. The seedling and stem resemble Matij Jueming, but the leaves are small at the base and pointed at the tip, exactly like locust leaves, and do not close at night. In autumn, it opens yellow five-petaled flowers and produces pods like a little finger, about two cun long, with seeds inside resembling Abelmoschus manihot (Huangkui) seeds. This is what *Jiu Huang Ben Cao* refers to as Shanbiandou.
