Honey-fried Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) tonifies the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), while raw Astragali Radix penetrates the exterior. Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) is used as a guiding herb; it is incompatible with Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Guijia, 龟甲) and Dictamni Cortex (Baixianpi, 白鲜皮), and fears Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风). However, when Astragali Radix combines with Saposhnikoviae Radix, its efficacy is greatly enhanced; this represents a relationship of mutual fear and mutual assistance.
It has a sweet taste and neutral qi. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. It tonifies deficiency, expels pus from sores, benefits primordial qi, strengthens the spleen and stomach, dispels muscular heat, and consolidates the exterior to stop sweating and diarrhea. It assists Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) in generating blood and aids Saposhnikoviae Radix in driving out wind. Raw usage is slightly cool. It is suitable for consolidating the exterior and stopping sweating.
It grows in the valleys of Shu Commandery, Luoxi, Taoyang, and other places. The variety from Mianshang in Shanxi is superior; those that are tight and solid like arrow shafts are best. The leaves resemble those of the locust tree and also look like Tribulus Terrestris (Jili, 蒺藜). It opens yellow-purple flowers and bears small, pointed pods.
It should not be used by those with internal heat. When using Astragali Radix, do not use Medicago sativa root (Muzhuxuegen, 苜蓿根), commonly known as "Earth Astragalus" (Tu Huangqi, 土黄芪); it has a bitter taste and is hard and brittle, and ingestion causes emaciation. It also resembles Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草 - *Note: Text says Mu Cao, likely referring to a specific local variant or typo for Gancao/Licorice contextually, but strictly translated as Wood Grass/Mu Cao*). For intestinal wind with bloody stool, take together with Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) pills. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For hematuria with severe pain, take together with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) powder. Use honey-fried Raphani Fructus (Laifu, 莱菔/radish) slices about four to five inches thick, do not burn them, dip them in the powder and eat, washed down with salt water. (No. 2.)
For sweating, thirst, and deficient pulse that is not surging, decoct together with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) and take. (No. 3.)
For wind disease causing aphasia, decoct with Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) in water and fumigate. (No. 4.)
