(Shrub) Disperses wind-heat of the Liver.
Rui He (specifically enters the Liver meridian), is a drug for ophthalmology.
Generally, eye diseases are often caused by wind-heat pathogens invading the Liver, leading to blood deficiency and resulting in unclear vision.
Therefore, the symptoms must manifest as wind-swelling and eczema of the upper and lower eyelids, and heat obstruction in the left and right eyes.
(Ren Zhai said: Tension and pulling sensations, with blue-green pupils and white eyelids, itching with clear tears, without redness or pain, is called Wind Eye; protrusion of the black eyeball, hard and swollen-red eyelids, purulent discharge and wet tears, internal burning pain, is called Heat Eye; turbid eyes with tearing, soft and swollen eyelids, upper congestion, sourness, astringency, and slight redness, is called Qi Eye; when wind and heat combine, there is itching and floating redness; when wind and qi contend, the itching and astringency are deep; when blood-heat gathers, lesions such as skin overgrowth, millet-like bumps, red threads, and hordeolum (stye) arise; when qi and blood do not reach, conditions such as dim vision, ptosis, nyctalopia, and visual obstruction occur; pale purple with hidden red indicates deficient heat; bright red with jealous intensity indicates excess heat; exposed fleshy growths around the cornea indicate excessive heart fire and blood abundance; red membranes on the sclera resembling umbrella paper indicate qi stagnation and blood coagulation; heat stagnation causes the pupil to bulge inward with a reddish sclera; cold syndromes cause greenish-blue pupils and a withered sclera; prolonged eye heat combined with subsequent wind-heat invasion leads to redness and eczema; absence of redness in the eye but presence of pain indicates phlegm-fluid retention; liver qi stagnation with accompanying heat causes photophobia; accumulation of heat damaging fullness after eating causes difficulty in closing eyelids; reddish sclera or red veins indicate heat in the Lung; ulcer-like spots on the upper/lower eyelids or between the eye and lips indicate heat in the Spleen; nebula arising from lung heat; nebula resembling broken rice grains is easy to dissipate; nebula resembling plum blossoms is difficult to eliminate.)
Its warmth can disperse wind (the qi is not excessively warm); its coldness can overcome heat; its sweetness can nourish blood, thereby reducing fire and stopping tears, curing the eye disease.
If red veins are outside the nebula membrane, this herb is suitable.
(Di Yun Gao formula to remove nebula: Rui Ren [Prunus mume seed] 5 fen, de-oiled; Qing Yan [Halite] 1 fen; Zhu Zi [Pig testis/seed] 5 qian. Pound together two thousand times until paste-like, store, and apply to the eye. Another prescription: Rui Ren 2 liang, de-oiled; Bai Peng Sha [Borax] 1 qian; She Xiang [Musk] 2 fen. Grind uniformly, store. Extraordinary effect in removing nebula.)
Soak in decoction, remove skin and tips, split into two pieces. Decoct together with Mang Xiao [Mirabilite], Mu Tong [Akebia Caulis], and Tong Cao [Tetrapanacis Medulla] for one fu shi (approx. 2 hours). Remove, grind into paste, and add to medicine.
