(Fish without scales) Clears heat and detoxifies blood stasis in the Liver and Kidney meridians.
*Chrysaora quinquecirrha* (Jellyfish) [Hai Zhe] (Specifically enters the Liver and Kidney meridians). Commonly known as jellyfish. It is what is referred to as "water mother" in Guangdong. According to texts, it grows in the East Sea. Its shape resembles a blood clot. Large ones are as big as a bed; small ones are as big as a dou (a unit of volume). It has no eyes, abdomen, or stomach. It uses shrimp as its eyes; when the shrimp move, it sinks. Hence it is called "Water Mother with Shrimp Eyes." It is also said that the water mother's form is condensed and coherent, red-purple in color, without mouth or eyes, with hanging filamentous matter under its abdomen. Flocks of shrimp attach to it, sucking its saliva, floating and sinking like flying. When embraced by the tide, they are frightened away and cannot return. People harvest it, soak it in ash alum, remove its blood juice, and its color turns white. Concentrated into "jellyfish head," its taste is superior. Investigating its main therapeutic effects, it generally can promote blood circulation to resolve stasis, clear heat and detoxify, and its qi nature is not particularly warm. This is likely because it belongs to the category of blood; blood tastes salty, and saltiness enters the Kidney. Blood is stored in the Liver, and since *Hai Zhe* resembles a blood clot, it mostly enters the Liver. It is produced in water, and the Kidney belongs to Water, so it also mostly enters the Kidney. Therefore, accumulated blood from consumptive diseases is resolved by it; infant erysipelas caused by fire injury is eliminated by it; illnesses from river fish (illnesses caused by eating fish/crustaceans) are treated by it. However, it is taboo to pickle it with white sugar, as it will immediately digest and cannot be stored for long, due to Earth overcoming Water, with no other meaning.
(Bivalves) Relieves vexation and heat in the chest.
*Sinonovacula constricta* (Razor clam) [Cheng] (Specifically enters the Kidney meridian, concurrently enters the Liver meridian). It is a small bivalve in the sea. Similar to freshwater mussels. People in Fujian cultivate them in fields, waiting for tidal mud to accumulate and fertilize, calling it "razor clam field." Its meat can be processed into dried, light-flavored "razor clam intestines" to serve as seafood delicacies. (Razor clams live in sea mud, two to three cun long, as thick as a finger, open at both ends.) Taste is sweet, nature is neutral. Boiled and eaten, it can treat evil heat and vexation in the chest. Eaten after meals, it is suitable for those taking mineral pills (Dan Shi). It also treats deficiency heat after childbirth in women. This shows its nature belongs to Yin, thus it can clear heat and wash away vexation. However, it is only suitable for those with Water deficiency and Fire excess (Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire). If the Spleen and Stomach are inherently cold, taking it may cause disturbance of Qi and diarrhea. Texts say it can treat cold dysentery, which seems like a forced explanation and should not be deeply trusted.
