The tree on which they grow serves as the primary basis for treatment. The commonly used varieties are black, yellow, and white. The yellow and white varieties are both considered tonics. Among them, Sang'er (Sanghuang, 桑耳) is most frequently used in medicine. The black variety is also known as Jin'er (Golden Ear), and the white variety is also known as Yin'er (Silver Ear); both are rich in gum-like substances. They primarily treat yin deficiency and lung nourishment. Sang'er treats: epistaxis (nosebleed), wind-cold injury, diarrhea, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea in women, amenorrhea with blood stasis, and abdominal masses in men.
Sangmu'er San (Mulberry Fungus Powder): Sangmu'er (roasted), Chenpi (Citrus reticulata peel, roasted until slightly yellow), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, stir-fried) each 1 liang; Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried) 2 liang. Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, administered before meals with congee water. It treats hemorrhoids and pruritus and pain around the anus. Another prescription: Sangmu'er 1 liang (skin removed, steamed with 5 sheng of rice), mixed with jujube paste and pounded into pills the size of hemp seeds. Take 1-2 pills per dose. It treats retained fluid and old food stagnation.
Xingren (Apricot Seed) treats: moistening the lungs, releasing the muscle layer, directing qi downward, moving phlegm, dispersing cold, inducing sweating, eliminating accumulation, reducing swelling. It treats throat obstruction, abdominal obstruction, cough, upper jiao wind-dryness, constipation due to large intestine qi stagnation, beriberi, insufficient lactation in women, and pruritus and pain of the vulva (externally applied as a poultice). Note: Apricot kernels with two embryos are toxic and can cause death.
Xingzi Tang (Apricot Kernel Decoction): Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) in equal parts; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) in half doses. Coarsely crush. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 cups of water, 5 apricot kernels, and 3 slices of ginger. Decoct until one-sixth remains, take warm. It treats Qi-water pathology. If complicated by external contraction, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) in equal amounts. For chronic cough with qi deficiency and wheezing urgency, remove Xingren and Renshen, and double the dosage of Mahuang, Shaoyao, Ganjiang, and Wuweizi.
Xingren Sangpi Tang (Apricot Kernel and Mulberry Bark Decoction): Xingren 1 liang, Sangbai pi (Mori Cortex) 5 qian, Shengjiang zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice), Baimi (White Honey), Baitang (White Sugar) each 1 liang, Zisu zi (Perillae Fructus), Ziwan (Asterae Radix) each 2 qian, Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) each 4 qian. First, decoct Beimu and Tiandong in water until reduced to one-fifth, grind and squeeze to extract juice. Add the Xingren paste and simmer together until it resembles thin syrup. Take 5 fen per dose, warm. Adjust dosage according to the child's age. It treats pediatric cough, restlessness, and wheezing urgency.
Xingren Gao (Apricot Kernel Paste): Xingren stir-fried until scorched and ground into powder, mixed with Congzhi (Scallion Juice) and formed into pills. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear canal. It treats otorrhea (discharge from the ear), whether accompanied by pain or pus.
