Dispersing, detoxifying, and killing parasites.
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, and toxic. Treats convulsions and epilepsy (Jingxian), subcutaneous abscesses of bone (Fugu Jiongnu) (rooted in the Zang-Fu organs: combined with snake slough, tangled hair, burnt to ash, and taken with wine. Note: If Fugu Jiongnu does not ulcerate, pus adheres to the bone, hence the name. Those unfamiliar may mistakenly treat it as Zeifeng [thief wind]. In Fugu Jiongnu, the painful area is hot, the limbs alternate between hot and cold, urine is dark red, stool is constipated without sweating; resolving heat and dispersing pathogens will eliminate the condition. In Zeifeng, the painful area is not hot, there is no alternating chills and fever, the body feels cold, and mild relief is obtained with heat application; sweating occurs occasionally, and treatment with acrid-warm wind-dispelling herbs is appropriate). Applies to scrofula ulcers (Louli Chengchuang) (sound "lou". Roasted, ground into powder, mixed with lard for topical application). Relieves wind-heat and worm-induced toothache (decocted for mouth rinsing. Li Shizhen stated: It is a herb for the Yangming channel, utilizing its toxicity to attack toxicity, with additional parasiticidal effects). Applied to infant double tongue (Chongshe) (burnt to ash, mixed with wine, applied under the tongue several times daily). Treats impotence (Qiyinwei) (burnt to ash, applied to the genitals). Use those suspended on trees and exposed to wind and dew, roasted before use (for treating carbuncles and swellings, mix with vinegar for topical application; for washing sores, decoct for use).
Light in quality, dispersing, dispelling wind, and transforming phlegm.
Acrid and salty in taste, slightly warm in nature. The silkworm remains stiff without rotting, having acquired the qi of clear transformation; thus, it can treat wind-phlegm, dissipate nodules, and unblock meridians (Silkworms become stiff when afflicted by wind-disease, hence used to treat wind; it can dissipate phlegm caused by rebellious counterflow of ministerial fire). Its aroma and flavor are both thin, light and floating, ascending, entering the Lung, Liver, and Stomach channels. Treats stroke with aphonia, cephalalgia and toothache due to head wind, throat obstruction with swelling (chao into powder, mixed with ginger juice, taken with water, one qian, should expectorate stubborn phlegm), erysipelas with itching (both caused by wind-heat), scrofula and tubercles, phlegmatic malaria and blood disorders, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea (wind-heat invading the Liver), pediatric convulsive malnutrition (Jinggai), skin resembling scales (due to deficiency of qi and blood, also known as fetal dirt, decocted for bathing). Promotes lactation, eliminates scars. Do not use for various conditions caused by blood deficiency without external wind-cold pathogenic factors. The best quality comes from head silkworms that are white and straight. Soak in rice washing water for one day until mulberry exudate floats up, strain and dry, wipe clean of flesh, hairs, mouthparts, and claws, then crush. Adverse interactions with Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case), Poria (Fuling), Poria with Pine Root (Fushen), Platycodon (Jiegeng), and Dioscorea Hypoglauca (Bixie).
Silkworm cocoon, sweet in taste, warm in nature. Can drain ministerial fire of the Bladder, guide clear qi upward to the mouth, and treat polydipsia (Silkworms and horses both belong to Wu, corresponding to the Li trigram, governing the Heart. During the stage of spinning cocoons and retreating/hiding, drinking the silk-reeling water can suppress heart fire and treat polydipsia). For carbuncles and sores without heads, burnt to ash and taken with wine (one unit taken produces one head of pus, two units produce two heads).
Male silkworm moth, hot in qi and lustful in nature, primarily secures essence and strengthens yang, allowing for tireless sexual intercourse (Silkworm molt paper burnt to retain its character, mixed with a small amount of musk and honey, applied to gangrenous stomatitis; adding alum is particularly effective. *Baiyi Fang*: Silkworm paper burnt to ash, taken with wine or water, can treat evil influences, mania, and weeping).
