Also known as Bai Mao Ci (White-Haired Thorn). Wang Lianshi recorded in his medical texts: It is a woody vine; its thorns are long and can pierce human skin and flesh, causing immediate swelling and unceasing pain. It is also called Bu Xin Mu (Wood That Cannot Be Chopped); mountain dwellers do not chop it...

After filling the stomach, the remaining juice drips for half a day. Its texture is flexible and easy to process; used to make footwear tough like hemp, hence the name, implying buying vines to substitute for hemp.
Treatment for snake bites: Both fresh and dried forms are effective.
Hong Pi Teng (Red-Bark Vine)
Also known as Guang Fu Teng, and alternatively as Zi Jin Pi (Purple-Gold Skin). Sprouts appear after Start of Summer. Stems and branches spread; leaves resemble Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui Zhi) leaves, slightly pointed and soft. The leaf petiole is red. Chewing yields a slight fragrance and a slippery, adhesive sensation. The root penetrates deep into the soil; the medicinal part is the root bark. It must be washed clean with water, removing the outer coarse bark, using only the inner red bark. Upon entering the mouth, the taste is pungent, fragrant, and cooling, similar to Borneolum Syntheticum (Long Nao / Ice Borneol).
Indicated for pain caused by wind-dampness, strain injuries, falls and trauma, stomach qi pain, food stagnation, and sha distension. All are decocted in wine and taken orally. It is an indispensable ingredient in Zi Jin Ding (Purple-Gold Pill).
External application method for Lei Tou Feng (Thunderhead Wind) swelling and pain: Decoct Zi Jin Pi, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Du Huo), Paeoniae Rubra Radix (Chi Shao), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Chang Pu), and Scallion heads until thickened like paste. Apply topically. Pain stops immediately upon application, with miraculous efficacy.
Wang Lianshi stated: Jin Gu Xiang is now called Jin Gu Xiang (Tight-Bone Fragrance) by people; it is the same as Hong Mu Xiang, also known as Mu La, with the formal name Zi Jin Pi. Locally produced varieties have weaker efficacy and are mainly used in plasters to promote blood circulation and dissipate qi stagnation.
