Yunxi Fang states: Among fallen flowers, those facing upward are considered precious. There are many varieties of Camellia japonica (Shancha), among which the double-petaled large red variety is superior and suitable for medicinal use. Baocao Jing records: Although there are numerous varieties of Camellia japonica, only the Baozhu variety is used medicinally. Its flowers are large red with four large petals, and within these large petals grow extremely numerous small fragmented petals. The taste is astringent; it is harvested in February and March and used after shade-drying. If the double-petaled variety consists entirely of large petals, it is called Yangcha (Foreign Tea) and is not used medicinally; single-petaled varieties are also not used medicinally. Qunfang Pu records: Baozhu Camellia japonica can replace Curcuma aromatica (Yujin); when ground into powder and mixed with sesame oil, it can be applied to burns from boiling water or fire.
The taste is slightly pungent and sweet, and the nature is cold. It invigorates blood circulation and dissipates abscesses; it is used for traumatic injuries and hematemesis (vomiting blood). It also treats intestinal wind with bloody diarrhea, burns, epistaxis (nosebleed), and moxibustion sores. All are dried by roasting, ground into powder, and taken orally with wine on an empty stomach, using seven flowers. Baocao Jing states: It cools blood, invigorates blood, stops bleeding, and belongs to astringent agents. It reduces abscesses and swelling from falls and blows, stops chronic dysentery, intestinal wind with bloody stool, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, hematuria, epistaxis, and hematemesis; externally applied to moxibustion sores.
For red dysentery: Jiusheng Kuhai records: Use large red Baozhu Camellia japonica flowers, shade-dry and grind into powder, mix evenly with white sugar, steam three to four times over a rice cooker, and take orally.
For nosebleeds: Heming Yuanfang records: Harvest double-petaled large red Camellia japonica flowers in February and March, shade-dry them, and when needed, take five or six flowers, decoct in water, and drink to stop bleeding immediately.
Another prescription from Zhangshi Bixiao Fang: For epistaxis, use the large red Baozhu Camellia japonica, roast and grind into powder, take 3 to 5 qian, and swallow with boiling sugar water.
For hematemesis and cough: Bu Yao Liangfang records: Roast Baozhu Camellia japonica on tiles until black, mix with red sugar, and take daily orally without limitation on quantity. Another method: Take ten Baozhu Camellia japonica flowers, 5 qian of Carthamus tinctorius (Honghua), 1 liang of Bletilla striata (Baiji), and 4 liang of Ziziphus jujuba (Hongzao), decoct in water to obtain one bowl, drink the liquid, and decoct the dregs again for a second dose. Jujubes can be eaten at any time as well.
Jiang Yi Yaojing Shiyi Fu states: Camellia japonica flower is an excellent general for treating hematemesis, epistaxis, and intestinal wind with bloody stool.
Song Chunhui said: I once saw someone suffering from "nipple blooming" (a condition resembling ulceration or prolapse of the nipple) that was about to fall off, with extreme pain. Someone taught him to roast Baozhu Camellia japonica, grind it into powder, mix with sesame oil, and apply topically.
For hemorrhoidal bleeding: Wang Ziming Fang records: Grind Baozhu Camellia japonica into powder and take orally with water.
