High-quality walnut oil supplements Fire (warming and tonifying Kidney Yang). If extracted from spoiled walnuts, it is toxic and of inferior taste, and should not be consumed.
It belongs to the same category as hazelnuts but has a milder nature. It can stop dysentery, warm the Kidneys, stimulate appetite, and eliminate intestinal filth and accumulation. When combined with Mugwort Wood (Muxiang) and Cornus Fruit (Shanzhuyu), it can invigorate Yang Qi.
(Here the text describes a plant resembling a round pomelo, growing on vines with red fruits; soaked in wine and taken orally, it promotes Blood circulation (according to *Yaoxing Kao*).)
This is the Sea Date (Haizong), which is the seed of the Windmill Palm (Fengweijiao), sometimes called "Zao" (Jujube), but it is not actually a Jujube. Peel off the green skin with a knife, boil it in a solution of calcined stone (Duanshi Tang), soak it in honey, seal it in a bottle, and it can be stored for a long time and sent far away without spoiling. It tastes sweet and delicious, has a warm nature, aids digestion and expands the Middle Jiao, eliminates phlegm and stops coughing, benefits Qi and moistens the complexion. Long-term consumption makes one plump and beautiful.
Produced in Dadong Mountain in Annan (Vietnam), it grows in places of extreme Yin, so its nature is purely Yin, enabling it to treat Fire in the Six Channels (Liu Jing). Locals call it Annanzi or Dadong Guo. It resembles a dried green olive, with blackish-yellow wrinkled skin. When soaked in water, it swells layer by layer like floating algae. Inside is a soft shell containing two kernels. It tastes sweet and bland, treats acne blocked by Fire toxin, and takes effect immediately upon ingestion. It also treats all kinds of Heat syndromes and consumptive injuries, hematemesis, epistaxis, and lower bleeding; detoxifies and dispels summerheat; treats epidemic red eyes (conjunctivitis), wind-fire toothache, food stagnation due to parasites causing poor appetite, hemorrhoids and fistulas, dry cough without phlegm, bone-steaming internal heat, Fire syndromes of the Sanjiao, and is effective for various sores. Its merits are too numerous to recount.
Jie Fen (Node Powder) / Baxian Lotus Root Powder
In winter, dig up old lotus roots, crush them to extract juice, settle the powder, and dry it. Slice it with a knife; it is white as crane feathers. To consume it as food, first mix it evenly with a small amount of cold water, then pour boiling water into it. It coagulates like glue, looking lovely like red jade. Add white sugar frost to eat. It greatly harmonizes Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) and generates body fluids. *Bencao Gangmu* only records under the Lotus Root entry that clarified lotus root powder eaten can lighten the body and prolong life, unaware that its function is more specifically beneficial for nourishing blood and stopping bleeding. For all kinds of conditions, there are no contraindications, and it can be taken. *Yangyu Yueling* has a method for clarifying lotus root powder: Take coarse lotus roots in any quantity, wash them clean, cut them, and soak for three days and nights, changing the water daily until extremely clean. Drain, crush into mud, and squeeze out pure juice using cloth. Crush the dregs finely again and squeeze out the remaining juice. Then gently filter to remove the turbid sediment, mix with a little clear water, stir, and let settle. Discard the clear water above; the powder at the bottom is good powder. Dry it and store it. It can be steamed with glutinous rice flour and white sugar, or taken with white sugar and boiling water. Lingfen (Water Chestnut Powder) and Qianfen (Euryale Seed Powder) use this same method. It tastes sweet, has an aromatic odor, and a neutral nature. It regulates the Middle Jiao, stimulates appetite, supplements marrow and benefits blood, moves Qi in the Qi division, clears exterior Heat. Regular consumption calms the mind, generates wisdom, dispels summerheat, and generates fluids.
Jie Fen
Produced in the Huai'an and Baoying areas, where it is abundant. It is made by crushing lotus nodes, settling, extracting powder, and drying. Its price is several times that of lotus root powder.
It tastes sweet, slightly bitter, and has a neutral nature. It opens the diaphragm, supplements the waist and Kidneys, harmonizes blood vessels, disperses all kinds of blood stasis, and generates new blood. It is suitable for consumption after childbirth and for those with hematemesis.
*Huanyou Biji* records: South of the Huai River is all wetlands. Residents cultivate lotus roots and filter them into powder when free from other work. After thorough purification and removal of dregs, retaining the sweet liquid, wind blowing and sun exposure gradually form broken pearls. Pour hot water over it to eat. It relies entirely on nature, having a unique flavor, and is a worthy wild food. The most famous is Pian Fen (Slice Powder), selected from the best lotus roots, washed and dried. The labor cost is ten times normal. Once made, it looks like flakes of white clouds, unstained by dust, and tastes superb. Only those with considerable means can produce it.
Baxian Lotus Root Powder
*Jingyan Guangji* records: This powder nourishes the Stomach and preserves Yuan Qi, treating all kinds of deficiency-consumption miscellaneous diseases.
Baihua Lotus Root Powder: Equal parts of Poria (Baifuling), fried White Hyacinth Bean (Baibiandou), and Honey-fried Lotus Seed Meat (Lianmi). Mix with human milk, add boiling water, and take at any time.
Ren Hong Wan (Human Red Pill)
*Jishi Yangsheng Ji* records: Specifically treats childhood consumptive weakness, extremely efficacious. Use twenty-one human dragons (i.e., Ascaris lumbricoides and child's urine, washed clean, baked on tile until not black, ground into powder), thirty unbroken-skin red dates (steamed hot on rice, peeled and pitted), Radish Seeds (Luofuzi) 1.5 qian (fried and ground), Large Prepared Rehmannia Root (Dashudi) 5 qian (boiled until soft, pounded into paste), True Lotus Root Powder 1.5 liang (ground), True Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian) 6 fen, fried with wine (ground into powder). Combine the red date flesh and Prepared Rehmannia paste with the other powdered medicines, pound evenly into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Each morning, swallow seven pills with plain boiling water. Increase by two pills daily until reaching twenty-one pills, then stop increasing. One course of treatment cures the disease. I have tested this repeatedly with success; do not overlook it lightly.
