The oldest roots that penetrate deepest into the soil are used for medicinal purposes.
For applying to treat toothache, which can eliminate the root cause, take the outer bark of the cinnamon tree root directly.
Xuezhai Gubi stated: Among flowers, only the rock osmanthus has four petals. I believe that all living things born from the earth have a number of five; thus, the flowers of grasses and trees all have five petals. Only the osmanthus is the tree of the moon, residing in the Western region. Four is the completed number of Metal in the West; therefore, its flowers have four petals and are golden in color, blooming when autumn clouds clear.
It resembles the juniper (Guifeng) and is also known as Water Pine (Shuisong). Those growing by embracing other trees are tough in texture. The fresh bark is peeled off to make shoes. Commonly known as "Baohiang Lv" (Embrace-Fragrance Shoes), they are abundant in Chaozhou.
It can treat damp Hong Kong foot (Tinea pedis) and ward off evil winds.
Zhangli
This is the bark of the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora). *Bencao Gangmu* records Camphor Wood, Camphor, and Camphor Knots, but omits the bark and seeds. Nowadays, people living in the mountains generally find the bark and seeds effective for treating diseases, so I urgently supplement this record.
Bark (preferably from old knots of ancient camphor trees): Treats Tianxing Wenyi (Epidemic febrile diseases caused by pathogenic factors), Shidu Liuzhu (Flowing and accumulating damp-heat toxins), bathes for scabies and tinea, and washes for Hong Kong foot.
Xinteng Yujufang (Recipe for Heart Pain from Yuju Fang): Take the bark of fragrant camphor, remove the black surface layer during collection, use the second inner layer of bark, crush it, decoct in water, and drink. The pain stops immediately and never recurs.
Xingzhang Shangshen Jinfang (Splendid Recipe for Injuries from Judicial Beatings): Decoct camphor bark in aged rice wine until the flavor is extracted, mix with the comb blood of an old rooster, and consume. It stops pain and disperses blood stasis with immediate effect.
Huoluan Shangtu Xiexie Chuaxinfang (Transmission Message Recipe for Cholera with Vomiting and Diarrhea): Take a handful of camphor bark, decoct in water, and take warm. Vomiting and diarrhea stop immediately.
Jiaoshang Shengchuang Jiabaofang (Family Treasure Recipe for Sores on Feet): These sores resemble small pen tubes. For larger ones, chew camphor leaves until cooked, slightly sprinkle Baidu Dan (Antitoxic Powder) externally, and apply camphor leaves. Continuous changing leads to cure.
Min notes: *Bencao Gangmu* states that camphor wood is pungent and warm, aromatic and penetrating, with the ability to dispel dampness. Therefore, it is suitable for illnesses among people living in mountainous areas. *Xiangshan County Annals* records: During the Wanli era, a great epidemic occurred in the county. A Daoist priest taught people to decoct and drink the bark of thousand-year-old camphor trees to recover, stating that because the tree is old and has endured frost and snow for a long time, its nature becomes cool and can dissipate epidemic qi. This aligns with Zangqi's statement that camphor wood can treat evil qi, Zhong'e (sudden collapse due to evil pathogens), and Guizhu (ghostly afflictions).
