Chen Lianghan stated: Fresh tobacco leaves are toxic; ingestion causes poisoning, which is difficult to treat once symptoms appear. The stems are even more potent. People in Dengzhou and Laizhou use them to poison fish. For large fish in streams and ponds that are hard to catch, this method is employed. Whether dry or wet tobacco stems can be used, they should be chopped, pounded together with green walnut husks, and placed in water. Within the time it takes to eat a meal, large fish float to the surface as if intoxicated, while smaller ones die. Even eels, loaches, turtles, shrimp, crabs, clams, and mussels are killed simultaneously. The toxicity is so fierce. However, when these stems are used to make smoking tobacco, the flavor of the stems becomes mild, far inferior to the rich flavor of the leaves.
Treatment for Nasal Discharge (Nasal Septum Perforation/Chronic Rhinitis): Empirical prescription by Yang Chunya: Take half a jin (approx. 500g) of tobacco leaves, dry them in the sun, grind into an extremely fine powder, mix with four liang (approx. 400ml) of flower dew, dry again, then grind with rose cakes and insufflate into the nose. For those suffering from nasal discharge due to smoking "Orchid Tobacco," smoke the dried backbones of white salted fish and inhale the smoke; recovery occurs within several days. "Orchid" refers to a type of orchid seed brought by Jiangxi merchants, specifically *Eupatorium fortunei* seeds. It has a strong, fragrant aroma. The seeds are ground and mixed into tobacco, named "Orchid Tobacco." Smokers perceive an orchid fragrance, but its qi ascends sharply, often damaging the brain at the vertex, easily leading to nasal discharge. Prescription from Ye Tianshi's Zhongfu Hall: Treats bone and joint pain, flaccidity, numbness, and bi-syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness, as well as knee-crane wind, generalized joint wind, hemicephalic leakage, and frozen shoulder. A certain plaster uses juice from fresh tobacco leaves to soak frankincense (*Resina Olibanum*), dried and added to the medicine, utilizing its aroma to penetrate and unblock the meridians.
Snake Bites: Recorded in *Cihang Huoren Shu*: First, avoid wind and squeeze out the poisoned blood. Apply pounded raw tobacco leaves to the wound. If fresh leaves are unavailable, use dried leaves ground into powder. Tobacco oil or soot can also be used. *Bu Yao Liang Fang* records treatment for snake and venomous insect bites: Use equal parts Houttuynia (*Houttuyniae Herba*), wrinkled-face grass, tobacco leaf, and Cassia Seed (*Cassiae Semen*). Pound until mushy and apply externally.
Repelling Bedbugs: *Huoren Shu* records using tobacco leaves spread on the bed as a mattress substitute, or burning them to fumigate, which eliminates bedbugs completely.
Bamboo pipes that are old, dark-colored, and hairy are considered superior if used by men.
*Qiudeng Conghua* records: A man surnamed Zhang in Xinchang County used a bamboo pipe for over fifty years. It became black as lacquer and shiny enough to reflect images. He treasured it like a precious jade, rarely lending it even to close relatives or friends.
A person whose mother was ill lacked funds for medicine and pawned two strings of cash. The pawnshop owner suffered from a deficiency disease (*Xu Sun*) for which all medicines failed. Someone suggested that only a multi-year-old bamboo pipe could cure him. Thus, a piece of Zhang's pipe was cut into inches-long segments, decocted in water, and taken orally, resulting in recovery. Later, he rewarded Zhang with a huge sum of money.
Chen Yizhai said: Although tobacco pipes absorb the fumes of fire and smoke, they must be gradually permeated by human breath and saliva to become soft and penetrating. Pipes used by men for long periods develop a lustrous shine. Once touched by a woman's lips, the color becomes dull and lacks brilliance, often developing longitudinal cracks. Pipes are most sensitive to feces; carrying a good old pipe to the toilet makes it lose its gloss and become rough. Ivory pipes, conversely, crack and go rancid, becoming unusable. Such is the mutual incompatibility of material properties.
Used to kill gu poison and *Chuanshi Lao* (consumptive diseases like tuberculosis), apply to malignant ulcers. Split the center part of the pipe where the oil is transparent and soft; pound it into a paste and apply to ulcer crusts, or spread it on oiled paper to treat chest diaphragm disorders caused by parasites.
*Baicao Jing* records: For snake bites, first tie the swollen area tightly above the wound with an old oily hair rope worn by a woman, ensuring the rope does not press directly on the swelling. Then seal the area with earwax to stop pain. Subsequently, take a multi-year oily-black bamboo pipe section (purple ones are acceptable, hairy bamboo is best). Cut a segment about three cun long, chew it to swallow the juice, spit out the residue which tastes bland, and extract the oil from the pipe to apply to the affected area. Tobacco pipes taste spicy but become sweet after ingestion; the snake venom is resolved, pain stops, and natural healing follows. Many trials have proven effective. If snake teeth remain embedded in the flesh after a bite, applying tobacco oil will cause them to emerge naturally.
Sudden Profuse Uterine Bleeding (*Xue Beng*): Liu Yixuan stated: For cases of profuse uterine bleeding where all other medicines fail, use an old tobacco pipe from many years ago, preferably purple and oil-permeated. Cut one cun length, burn to ash, and use the yellow...
