Yansui Zhenzhi records: The leaves resemble those of the orchid (Lancao) but are thicker and greener; it is planted on field ridges. The roots are round and large, similar in size to sunflower roots (Kuikui), exposed above the soil, blooming with yellow flowers. People in the capital call it "Pielan" (Slanting Orchid).
It can detoxify coal poisoning.
Chuting Baizhu records: Canwu, a disciple of Monk Jian Gong, suffered from deafness. Da Gong stated that he would only recover after obtaining the Lingtong Grass (Spirit-Connecting Herb) from Mount Luofu. Canwu came to the Bogan area and entered the mountains at Yünü Peak, where he found this herb. The stem is three chi long, resembling chopsticks, hollow in the middle with solid ends, and bears seven leaves at the apex. The leaves are decocted in water for oral administration. The hollow part of the stem is cut off and inserted into both ears. At night, a sound like thunder was heard, and the deafness was immediately cured. It is used to treat deafness.
Zhifang Dian records: It originates from Nanning Prefecture, Guangxi. The leaves are smooth and tender, about two cun long, resembling ribbons.
For treating traumatic injuries to the hands and feet, take the leaves, warm them slightly by roasting over fire, and apply them to the affected area for immediate healing.
Zhifang Dian records: It originates from Nanning Prefecture, Guangdong; it is the fern (Jue). The root resembles Gouji (Cibotii Rhizoma), with hairs like dog fur, available in yellow and black varieties.
It stops bleeding from various sores and treats stubborn Bi syndrome (impediment syndrome); the black variety is more effective for killing parasites.
Snow Flower (Xuelli Hua) Appendix
Yanshan Zhi records: Its nature is greatly cold; it grows in deep valleys and can detoxify arsenic (Pishuang). It blooms in winter, hence its name.
It treats heat-toxin causing throat ulcers. Wanshi Jiaochao records: Take the root, crush it, and administer the juice orally.
When Zhu Chuliang was stationed in Zhenhai, locals harvested Snow Flowers. In the severe cold of winter, these flowers begin to grow. They bloom around the shores near the Dragon Pool at Zhaobaoshan Mountain. The seedlings are very short, resembling June Snow (Liuyue Xue), not exceeding two cun in height. When snow falls, they bloom with white flowers the size of beans, which locals harvest and dry for medicinal use.
External application for hemorrhoids: Powder the Snow Flower. For moist hemorrhoids, sprinkle the dry powder; for dry hemorrhoids, mix with sesame oil and apply once or twice. The hemorrhoids will subside and shrink.
Bencao Gangmu (Wood and Grass Category) states regarding Kugcao (Bitter Grass): It grows in lakes and marshes, is two to three chi long, and resembles Maopu (rush-like plants). It mainly treats leukorrhea (dai xia). It also treats two conditions: facial sallow complexion caused by excessive consumption of dry tea. The flavor, odor, and properties were previously unrecorded; now supplemented according to Zhang Lu's (courtesy name Yulu) Benjing Fengyuan. It is bitter, warm, non-toxic, aromatic, and penetrating, entering the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.
It regulates blood within the Qi level. Decocted and taken postpartum, it expels lochia (Elu). However, its bitter taste damages the Stomach, and its penetrating Qi injures the Brain. Those with delicate constitutions who consume rich foods may experience reduced appetite and diarrhea. Overconsumption leads to frequent headaches (Toufeng) in old age. Ancients feared multiple pregnancies.
Taking three qian of the seedlings, administered with Qu-lin wine after menstruation, prevents conception. This demonstrates its blood-damaging nature.
