She (Toad's Tongue)
This is the skin of the warty toad (*Bufo bufo gargarizans*), which can extract severe toxins from the body and draw internalized pathogens outward; its therapeutic effects cannot be fully enumerated. In the "Bufonidae" section of *Bencao Gangmu* (Compendium of Materia Medica), all treatments use the whole toad, with no cases of using only its skin. Only in the supplementary formulas, citing Sun Simiao's *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) for treating rectal prolapse, is one piece of toad skin used for fumigation and application, recording only minor efficacy while omitting its major functions. Therefore, this is specifically clarified to supplement the record.
Application for severe toxins: capable of extracting and consolidating toxins. A secret formula retrieved by Huang Ruliang in his travel chest records: For swollen and red fingers with toxic sores, use one live toad, freshly peel the skin, wrap it around the affected area with the outer side facing outwards. The next day, the toxin will be entirely extracted; or for conditions such as carbuncle on the back or carbuncle at the neck, if the toxin suddenly recedes internally, reapply if symptoms recur. It is crucial not to let the inner side of the skin touch the flesh, as it will adhere firmly and be difficult to remove. This method can also be used for toxin retreat after smallpox or chickenpox.
Luo Li (Scrofula) Healing Ointment: Treats scrofula where pus has been exhausted and swelling has subsided, but the wound has not yet closed. Apply this ointment. Take two toad skins (freshly peeled), two rat skins, two snake sloughs, and one large honeycomb. These four ingredients are all calcined into ash; dissolve one tael of water-soluble gelatin in one wine cup of well-water, add one tael of honey, and stir in one wine cup of sesame oil infused with centipede until uniform. When the ashes of the first four ingredients are about to take effect, add one fen of musk, spread onto silk cloth, ensuring it is not wet.
*Ling Mi Dan Yao* states: For anyone suffering from carbuncles, ulcers, or toxic sores, use one large earth toad, peel off the entire warty skin, and cover the wound with it. Prick several holes in the toad skin with a needle to allow the escape of toxic vapors, bringing a sense of calm; it adheres to the wound, preventing expansion, and protects against centipedes attracted by the odor. Truly miraculous.
She (Toad's Tongue) Extracting Ding (Hard Carbuncle) from *Waike Quanshu* (Complete Book of Surgery): In summer, for patients with ding sores, grind one toad tongue into a paste, apply toad belly skin over it, and the root of the sore will naturally emerge.
*Yuexi Congzai*: Resembles betel nut, found within holes/cavities; fresh specimens remain soft. It is traditionally believed to be toad feces, which is rare.
Indications: Malignant sores.
