[Flavor and Nature] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] For heat dysentery after drinking alcohol; wash away corneal opacity (membrane on the eye surface); treat massive bleeding from the nine orifices and fingers of limbs due to severe fright by washing the face with water. Taken with Cinnabar (Zhusha), it improves complexion, calms the heart and spirit. Treats halitosis; suitable for refining various mineral drugs. Added to wine and vinegar, it prevents spoilage (from *Jiayou Bencao*). Suitable for decocting yin-nourishing formulas (Yu Bo). Suitable for decocting all medicines treating phlegm-fire and qi-blood disorders (Li Shizhen).
Newly Drawn Water (Cold water freshly drawn)
[Indications] For diabetes mellitus (Xiao Ke), regurgitation, heat dysentery, painful urinary dribbling (Re Lin), and dark, scanty, difficult urination. It expels pathogens, harmonizes the middle jiao, and descends heat; all are suitable for drinking. Spraying it on carbuncles and swellings helps dissipate them; washing with it treats lacquer dermatitis. For prolapsed intestines due to falls and injuries, spraying cold water on the body and face causes the intestines to retract spontaneously. It also antidotes closed-mouth pepper toxicity and removes fish bones stuck in the throat (from *Jiayou Bencao*). Antidotes Machang sore toxicity (from *Leigong Paozhi Lun* · Cai). Antidotes arsenic trioxide (Pishi), Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root (Wuhui), distilled liquor, and coal dust toxicity. Treats dizziness, confusion, and thirst caused by heat stagnation (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Yuxi stated: Whenever water is used to treat diseases, one must select fresh clear spring water, not stagnant, turbid, or warm water. Not only is it ineffective, but it also harms the body.
Yu Bo stated: Newly drawn well water at dawn (Jinghua Shui) captures the primordial Qi of Heaven One floating on the surface. It is used to decoct yin-nourishing preparations, refine elixirs, and brew tea. Its nature and flavor are identical to snow water.
Li Shizhen stated: Wells and springs are manifestations of earth veins. Human meridians and blood correspond to them. One must select those where the soil is thick, the source is distant, and the quality is pure for consumption. The *I Ching* states: "Muddy wells are not eaten; clear, cold spring wells are drunk." This is correct. Humans are products of the earth; their endowment circulates with the Qi of mountains and rivers. Beauty, ugliness, longevity, and premature death are all interrelated. Metals, stones, plants, and trees follow the nature of water and soil; how much more so for the spirit of all things? There are springs for lustful people and wells for immortals, recorded in past annals, which will surely not deceive us. The *Huainanzi* says: Land generates people according to their categories. Therefore, mountain Qi produces many men, marsh Qi produces many women, water Qi produces many mute persons, wind Qi produces many deaf persons, forest Qi produces many fistula patients, wood Qi produces many hunchbacks, Qi below banks produces many with limb contractures, stone Qi produces many strong persons, dangerous terrain Qi produces many goiter patients, summer heat Qi leads to early death, cold Qi leads to longevity, valley Qi produces many bi-syndrome patients, hill Qi produces many manic persons, broad plain Qi produces many benevolent persons, ridge Qi produces many greedy persons. Hard soil yields rigid people, soft soil yields fragile people, clay soil yields large-bodied people, sandy soil yields small-bodied people, fertile soil yields beautiful people, barren soil yields ugly people, light soil yields profit-seeking people, heavy soil yields slow-witted people. Clear water regions have small voices, turbid water regions have loud voices, swift water regions yield frivolous people, sluggish water regions yield heavy/steady people. All respond to their kind. Furthermore, the *Hetu Kuo Di Xiang* states: The Nine Provinces have different names, and the rigidity and softness of water sources vary. In Qingzhou, Jue and Zhi tones meet; its Qi is light, people's voices are rapid, and its springs are sour and bitter. In Liangzhou, Shang and Zhi tones connect; its Qi is courageous, people's voices are obstructed, and its springs are bitter and pungent. in Yanzhou and Yuzhou, Gong and Zhi tones meet; its Qi is calm, people's voices are dignified, and its springs are sweet and bitter. In Yongzhou and Jizhou, Shang and Yu tones combine; its Qi is fierce, people's voices are agile, and its springs are salty and pungent. Observing these two theories, humans rely on water and soil for nourishment; can one not be cautious in selection?
Li Shizhen stated: According to the *Book of Later Han*: A woman suffered from a disease for years, known as Cold-Heat Zhu Disease. In November, Hua Tuo instructed her to sit in a stone trough and pour cold water over her at dawn, saying it should reach one hundred times. After seventy pours, she trembled violently, near death. The person pouring feared to stop, but Hua Tuo refused. At eighty pours, heat began to steam out, rising two or three feet high. After one hundred pours, he ordered fire to warm the bed, covered her tightly, and after a long time, cold sweat emerged. Powder was applied, and she recovered. Also, the *History of the Southern Dynasties* records: General Fang Boyu took Wushi San (Five-Mineral Powder) about ten times and developed a cold disease, wearing multiple layers even in summer. Xu Sibai diagnosed him, saying: "This is latent heat that must be dispersed by water; it cannot be done except in winter." In late November when ice and snow were intense, Xu had Fang undress and sit on a stone. Fresh cold water was poured from his head, exhausting twenty hu. Fang's jaws locked, and breath ceased. Family members cried and begged to stop, but Xu held a stick to prevent them. Another hundred hu of water were poured, then Fang could move, with Qi bulging on his back. Soon he sat up, complaining of unbearable heat, begging for cold drink. Xu gave him one sheng of water, and the disease cured. From then on, he often felt hot, wore single clothes in winter, and became fatter and stronger. I privately believe both cases involved latent Fire syndromes. As the *Suwen* states, all cases of jaw locking and trembling belong to Fire. The treatment principle is to disperse Fire when it is depressed. These two doctors poured cold water in winter at dawn because after Winter Solstice, Yang Qi is internal, and at dawn, Yang Qi is rising. Using cold to suppress it forces the heat to become extremely depressed, stimulating sweating and resolution. This follows the principle that things reverse when extreme, embodying the method of dispersion. The *Suwen* states: Treating against the pathogen is orthodox treatment; following the pathogen is counter-treatment. By going against or following, we unblock pathways and harmonize Qi. In spring, Yang Qi has leaked; in summer and autumn, Yin Qi is internal. Thus, it can only be performed from November to after Winter Solstice. These two doctors' skills were truly miraculous.
