(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Correction] Transferred from the Herb Section to this section.
[Names] Caomi (Grass Honey, from *Bencao Shiyi*), Jiluo.
[Collected Explanations] Zang Qi said: In the sands of Jiaohe, there is grass with hairs on its head; honey is produced among these hairs. The Hu people call it Jiluo.
Li Shizhen said: According to Li Yanshou's *History of the Northern Dynasties*, in Gaochang there is a grass named Yangci (Sheep Thorn), upon which honey grows, tasting very sweet and delicious. Also, *Records of the Four Princes of Liang* records that Gaochang paid tribute in "Ci Mi" (Thorn Honey). Jie Gong said: In Nanpingcheng, Yangci has no leaves, and its honey is white in color and sweet in taste; in Yancheng, Yangci has large leaves, and its honey is greenish in color and mild in taste. Gaochang is Jiaohe, located in Xifan (Western Regions), now known as Huozhou. Additionally, Duan Chengshi's *Youyang Zazu* records: In the country of North Tianzhu (Northern India), there is a honey-grass, which grows as a vine with large leaves, does not die in autumn and winter, and forms honey due to exposure to frost and dew. Furthermore, *Daming Yitongzhi* [Comprehensive Gazetteer of the Great Ming] records: In the Samarkand region of Xifan, small clumps of grass grow, with leaves fine as indigo plants; autumn dew condenses on them, tasting sweet like honey, and can be boiled into maltose syrup. Locals call it Da-ji-gubin, which is likely "Ganlu" (Sweet Dew). Based on these two accounts, both are types of grass honey, though it is unknown if this grass is indeed Yangci. There is also the KT Qi tree, which also produces honey, said to be usable in medicine but details are unclear; it is appended below.
[Appendix] KT Qi (pronounced "Bie") Note: Duan Chengshi stated: KT Qi originates from Persia and is also found in Fulin (Byzantium), named KT Boluotuo (KT pronounced "Duo"). The tree is over one zhang tall, with thin, bright, and clean green bark. Leaves resemble Ferula (Asafoetida), growing at branch tips, three leaves per branch. It is harvested in August and sprouts new shoots again in the twelfth lunar month. If branches are cut in July, a yellow juice resembling honey flows out, slightly fragrant, which can be used in medicine to treat diseases.
[Taste and Properties] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Bone-steaming fever with phlegm cough, acute dysentery with blood in stool, opening the stomach, relieving thirst, and eliminating irritability (Zang Qi).
