Zhanjiao (now known as Mizzhijiao Zhi, also called Jiaojia Zhi). When iron encounters Shensha (Cinnabar), it becomes soft like clay and fine like powder; stones treated with crane droppings turn into flying dust. Upon seeing orange blossoms, (the substance) resembles marrow. Broken strings and shattered swords return to their original state upon encountering Luanxue (Luan blood) (Luanxue is refined into a glue to bond broken parts, ensuring iron objects never break again); when seas dry up and rivers run dry, throwing in Youbo (swallows) causes the water surface to ripple immediately. To make lead resist fire refining, one must rely on Xiutian (now called Butianshi or Sky-Mending Stone); if one desires a solid form, how could one forget Zi Bei (Zi Bei Tian Kui, resembling common Malva verticillata but with a purple back and green front, capable of solidifying lead forms).
To keep Arsenic Trioxide stable in the crucible, reliance is entirely on Zongxin (There is a separate herb named Zongxin, now called Dianthus superbus, not the heart of a zongzi rice dumpling, lest confusion arise. This herb grows in certain prefectures where insects and beasts are abundant); Yinxiong (Realgar) is stabilized by Qin Hua (Celery flowers) (The herb is named Liqi, resembling Peony, with blue-green flowers reaching over three feet tall, leaves with yellow spots, bitter and astringent taste, usable; boiling Realgar with it stops its volatility immediately), forming a precipitate instantly. Encountering Chixu (named Chixu, now called Huxu Cao or Tiger Whisker Grass), using it to boil Cinnabar generates fire; water remains in the golden tripod. Fire generated in water cannot be achieved except through Huasui (A sea beast named Hu, whose marrow mixed with oil adheres to water, generating fire that cannot be extinguished; spraying with wine stops it. Do not collect under eaves); teeth regrow relying on Xiongshu Zhigu Mo (Male rat spinal bone powder) (If teeth fail to grow for many years, take male rat spine, grind to powder, rub on the site, and teeth regenerate as before). Fallen eyebrows and hair regrow instantly after applying Banxia (Pinellia ternata) (For fallen brows and hair, crush fresh Pinellia stems to extract juice, apply to bald areas for immediate growth). Strabismus or twitching eyes correct naturally with Wuhua (Wujiapi / Acanthopanacis Cortex) (Wujiapi has male and female leaves; fleshy growths on feet are tied with Langdang Gen / Datura metel root via a bandage, inducing relief from pain); frequent urination is cured by night-brewing Bamushu (Dissolve Bixie in water at night to stop nocturia). Cold body with abdominal distension relies on Lu'e (Cormorant) (For drum-like abdominal distension, mix Cormorant powder with rice water for immediate recovery); flooding blood is stopped by drinking Guazi (Sweet melon seed kernel powder, de-oiled, taken with liquid to halt bleeding instantly). Frequent coughing and rebellious Qi settle after taking Shu Xion (Processed Tianxiong /aconitum heterophyllum) dissolved in wine (Soaked Tianxiong, taken with wine, stabilizes immediately); generalized wind-rash clears with cold-sheng Cezi (Side-roots of Aconite, powdered and taken with cold wine for instant cure). Intestinal deficiency causing dysentery requires Caoling (Wugubeizi / Chinese Gall) (Gallnut powder taken with cooked water stops diarrhea instantly); prolonged thirst and vexation benefit from Zhuli (Bamboo Sap). Eliminating masses relies on Xiaosha (Saltpeter and Borax ground together and taken with wine for miraculous effect); increasing appetite requires Lu Pu Decoction (Reed rhizome and Magnolia bark decoction for poor appetite and low alcohol tolerance). Strengthening sinews and bones requires Congshan (Cistanche and Eel powder pills made with Polygonatum juice, doubling strength per Gan Ning Ji); preserving complexion and extending life requires Jingzheng Shenjin (Polygonatum juice steamed with Shenjin for seven days in willow steamers, formed into pills with honey, restoring youthful appearance). Knowing the location of sores involves pointing Yinjiao (Condensation from steamers placed in mouth to diagnose internal organ pain locations for treatment); postpartum edema resolves with Ganpi taken in wine (Licorice root powder in wine cures postpartum swelling instantly). Mouth ulcers and cracked tongues heal with Huangsu (Yellow root and butter powder held in mouth); severe headache relieved by Nasal Xiaomo (Saltpeter powder insufflated into nose stops pain instantly); fatal heartache seeks Yanhu (Yanhusuo powder taken in wine cures instantly).
Such are the merits of these hundred herbs. I, unworthy, encounter a bright era and mistakenly study medical principles; though seeking sage methods, it is hard to exhaust the subtleties. Briefly stating the functions of medicines, how could I indulge in immortal arts? Regarding processing methods—pao, ao, zhu, zhi—how can dates be recorded? To examine origins, one must consult Haiji. Ignoring my limited insight, I directly record pao, ao, zhu, zhi, listing herbal prescriptions, divided into Upper, Middle, and Lower volumes, containing three hundred items detailed below.
