[Preparation] Li Shizhen stated: Take 2 liang of Realgar (Pishí), 0.5 liang each of the kernels of Momordica charantia seed (Mubiezi Ren) and Croton tiglium seed (Badou Ren), and 2 qian of sand. Grind into powder, mix with oil from Momordica charantia seed (Mubiezi You) and petroleum ether (Shinao You) to form a paste, wrap in oiled paper, bury in an earthen pit for 49 days, then take out, break into small pieces, and store in porcelain vessels.
[Properties and Flavor] Pungent, sour, hot, toxic. Dugu Tao stated: Earth Yellow (Tuhuang) is used to process Realgar (Xionghuang).
[Indications] Withered tumors, warts, hemorrhoids, breast diseases, food stagnation, and various sores with foul flesh (Li Shizhen).
(From Song Dynasty *Jiayou Bencao*. Appendix: Silver Star Stone)
[Collected Explanations] Su Song stated: Gold Star Stone (Jinxing Shi) and Silver Star Stone (Yinxing Shi) are both produced in Haozhou and Bingzhou, collected at any time. The therapeutic effects of these two stones are generally similar. Kou Zongshi stated: These two stones treat severe wind disease (Leprosy/Damfeng), requiring a special method; they must be calcined before use. Gold Star Stone grows inside Cangshi stone, with golden bran-like flakes on the exterior; Silver Star Stone has silver-colored bran-like flakes. Another type is deep cyan, hard and moist, containing golden bran-like particles within; this is not used medicinally but is ground by craftsmen for vessels or women's ornaments. Li Shizhen stated: There are several types of Gold Star Stone. The two stones described by Su Song are also found in Wudang Mountain. Some say Gold Star Stone comes from Jiaodong, and Silver Star Stone from Yanmen; these are likely varieties of Mengshi (Calcareous Schist). The two stones mentioned by Kou Zongshi that treat severe wind disease, when cross-referenced with *Shenghui Fang* under the section for severe wind disease, are written as Gold Star and Silver Star Stones, suggesting they are related to Mengshi. *Danfang Jingyuan* in the Mengshi chapter also records the names of these two stones, which seem different from Su's description. Moreover, Gold Star and Silver Star Stones are non-toxic and treat heat-phlegm and blood disorders; Mengshi is toxic and treats wind-leprosy. Observing this, it appears there are two types of Gold Star and Silver Star Stones used in medicine. Additionally, Shezhou inkstones have varieties with Gold Star and Silver Star patterns. Qiongzhou also produces Gold Star Stone, suitable for making inkstones. Jadeite stone can grind gold and is also called Jin Xingming. These are all examples of same name, different substances. Liu Hejian's *Xuanming Fang* uses Gold Essence Stone (Jingjing Shi) and Silver Essence Stone (Yinjing Shi) in eye drop formulas; it is unknown if these are the same as the Gold Star and Silver Star Stones here.
[Properties and Flavor] Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Toxic accumulation in the Spleen and Lung, lung damage leading to hematemesis and hemoptysis, discharge of hot phlegm, and detoxification (*Jiayou Bencao*). Taken in small amounts after water-grinding, it calms the mind and treats bone fishbone impaction (Li Shizhen).
[Attached Formulas] Two new formulas. For hematemesis, hemoptysis, and lung damage: Equal parts of Gold Star Stone (Jinxing Shi), Silver Star Stone (Yinxing Shi), Xuanjing Stone, Buhui Wood, Yangqi Stone, and Yunmu Stone. Use one crucible, line the bottom with 1-2 cun of winter buffalo dung, add a layer of herbs, then 2 cun of ash, then another layer of herbs, repeating this process. Cover with ash and seal tightly with salt mud. Calcine with one cheng of charcoal for one day and night, bury in earth for one night, remove the medicinal block, discard the ash, and grind into powder. For every 1 liang of powder, add 0.5 qian each of Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) and Shexiang (Moschus), and 2.5 qian of Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla, stir-fried). Take 1 qian per dose, washed down with glutinous rice soup, three times daily (*Shenghui Fang*).
For severe wind insect sores, expelling five-colored insects: Pill of Various Stones: Equal parts of Gold Star Stone (Jinxing Shi), Silver Star Stone (Yinxing Shi), Yunmu Stone, Yuyuliang Stone, Huashi, Yangqi Stone, Cishi, Ningshui Stone, Miduosen, Ziran Tong, and Longxian Stone. Crush, place in a bottle, seal with salt mud. Calcine with 10 jin of charcoal until thoroughly heated, grind into powder, and make pills the size of soybeans using vinegar paste. Take 15 pills per dose, washed down with Baihuashe wine, three times daily, until cured (*Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
[Appendix] Metal and Stone Substances (from *Bencao Shiyi*) Chen Zangqi stated: Sweet, warm, non-toxic. Treats chronic emaciation, inability to eat, lack of luster, coldness in waist and legs, promotes robustness, benefits Yang Qi. If sudden heat causes hair loss, it can be taken after calcination. Produced in stones at Qingliang Temple on Mount Wutai, containing gold dust appearing reddish-brown.
