(Recorded in the Middle Category of *Shennong Bencao Jing*)
[Names] Konggongshi (from *Bencao Gangmu*), Tongshi.
Li Shizhen stated: Because it has hollow pores and hangs attached to the rock like a tree bud, it is called "Kongkong" (Hollow), which was later colloquially mispronounced as "Konggong".
Su Gong stated: This stone ranks below Zhongru (Stalactite). Its shape resembles the horns of cattle or sheep, with a hole passing through the center, hence named Tongshi (Passing Stone). *Bielu* mistakenly identified it as the root of Yenie, but the common people still call it Konggongshi, which is correct.
[Collection and Explanation] *Bielu* states: Konggongshi is the root of Yenie. It is greenish-yellow in color and grows in the valleys of Liangshan.
Tao Hongjing stated: Liangshan belongs to Fengyi Commandery. This is what is now known as Zhongchuang (Stalactite Bed). It is also produced in Shixing. These are large chunks that must be broken open. There are three types of minerals in the Zhongru category that share the same substance. The fluid dripping from the top of stone chambers accumulates over time to form knots; this is called Zhongchuang, which is Konggongshi. The smaller ones of the next grade are called Yenie, resembling cattle or sheep horns in size, one to two chi long. People currently refer to this as Konggongshi. The fluid dripping from Yenie, if light and fine, is called Zhongru (Stalactite). Although they belong to the same category, their therapeutic properties differ significantly, as do their prices. These three share the same root but grow in different places; their quality depends on the local terrain.
Zheng Baosheng stated: There are five types of minerals in the Zhongru category: Zhongru, Yenie, Konggongshi, Shichuang (Stone Bed), and Shihua (Stone Flower). Although they share the same substance, their primary treatments vary.
Su Song stated: Since Konggongshi and Yenie grow together with Zhongru, wherever there are rocks, there should be Zhongru. Yet, we do not hear of such occurrences today. Is it because usage is scarce, leading to fewer collectors? Or do contemporary people not know that Zhongru exists within the stones and fail to collect them all? It is impossible to investigate thoroughly.
Su Gong stated: Konggongshi ranks below Zhongru. *Bielu* mistakenly regarded it as the root of Yenie. In fact, Yenie is the root of Konggongshi. Laypeople mistake Konggongshi for Yenie. Tao Hongjing followed this error, identifying Konggongshi as Zhongchuang, which is incorrect.
Li Shizhen stated: Inferring from Jiangshi and Tongshi, it appears that the coarse forms growing attached to the rock are Yenie; those growing from Yenie and gradually becoming hollow are Konggongshi; and those growing from Konggongshi are Zhongru. Su Gong's explanation is superior. Essentially, Yenie is like the breast root of a human, Konggongshi is like the breast, and Zhongru is like the nipple.
[Flavor and Properties] Acrid, Warm, Non-toxic. Pu cited Shennong saying it is Acrid; Qibo said it is Salty; Bianque said it is Sour and Non-toxic.
Meng Shen stated: Sweet, Warm-natured.
Li Quan stated: Sweet, Slightly toxic.
Xu Zhicai stated: Magnolia bark (Mulan) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Xixin (Asarum) and Baizhu (Atractylodes macrocephala). Avoid consuming sheep blood.
[Indications] Indigestion due to food stagnation, evil qi accumulation causing malignant conditions, sores, carbuncles, hemorrhoids. Opens the nine orifices. Promotes lactation (*Shennong Bencao Jing*).
Penile ulcers in men, vaginal erosion in women, and food stagnation disease characterized by excessive drowsiness (*Bielu*).
Treats coldness in the waist and bi-syndrome (painful obstruction) in the knees caused by toxic vapors. Makes the voice clear and resonant (Zhen Quan). Lightens the body and fills out the muscles (Qingxiazi).
[Elucidation] Tao Hongjing stated: These two stones are unsuitable for making pills or powders. They can only be boiled in water to make decoctions or soaked in wine for drinking. They are very effective for treating leg weakness and Hongxiangjiao (Hong Kong foot / Tinea pedis).
[Attached Prescriptions] One new prescription.
Wind-dampness causing leg weakness: Konggongshi 2 jin, Shihu (Dendrobium) 5 liang, Wine 2 dou. Soak and consume (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*).
