(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
【Jieji (Collected Explanations)】
Zang Qi stated: It grows in mountain forests. Its shape resembles that of a centipede but is larger, with a black and spotted coloration, measuring two or three cun in length. There are also specimens as large as a finger, named Malu (Millipede), which can climb trees.
Li Shizhen stated: According to the *Shennong Bencao Jing*, Malu is also known as Baizu (Centipede), resembling a large Qiong insect. However, the text here states it resembles Baizu but is larger, and the even larger ones are called Malu, which seems to conflate Baizu with another entity. It is likely that this refers to the Malu found in mountains that has grown larger, hence the name Shanqiong (Mountain Qiong). Neither chickens nor dogs dare to eat it.
【Qiwei (Odor and Flavor)】Possesses great toxicity.
【Zhuzhi (Main Indications)】Treats excessive alcohol craving. Take one segment, burn it to ash, and administer with water; the patient will no longer desire the smell of alcohol. If more than one segment is used, the toxicity becomes fatal. Additionally, when burned until black and applied topically, it treats malignant sores. It also treats "white stiff" disease in silkworms; burnt to ash and applied as powder (Zang Qi).
【Fulu (Appendix)】Youyan (House Centipede) (From *Bencao Shiyi*)
Zang Qi stated: Its shape resembles a centipede but is much longer, with a pure yellow color without spots. The larger ones are as thick as a hairpin shaft. It has countless legs and is attracted to the fragrance of animal fat/oil, thus entering human ears and various orifices. Irrigating with donkey milk causes it to dissolve into water.
Li Shizhen stated: It is found everywhere, especially in decaying grass within walls and houses. Its shape resembles a small centipede, but its body is round rather than flat, and its tail is blunt and unbranched. It has many legs; the larger ones exceed one cun in length. Even after death, it curls into a ring. Therefore, Tao Hongjing mistakenly identified it as Malu. When it enters the human ear, blowing in Longnao (Borneol), Dilong (Earthworm), or sand alone is effective. Alternatively, it can be lured out using aromatic substances. *Huainanzi* states that "Acorus removes fleas and lice and attracts Lingqiong," referring to this insect. Yang Xiong’s *Fangyan* states: It is also known as Ruer (Entering Ear), Fu , , and .
When humans suffer from sores resembling heat rash but larger,
[The text cuts off here regarding the treatment method.]
Li Shizhen stated: Quzao (Earwig) likes to hide under rugs, hence its name. Sometimes written as . According to *Zhouli · Chi Bai Shi*: For any house with gaps, one must remove insects of the category, meaning to search for and eliminate them. This insect hides in walls and under objects, measuring less than one cun in length, resembling a small centipede, with a dark green-black color. It has two antennae and six legs located at the front of the abdomen. The tail is forked and capable of pinching objects; commonly known as Soujiazi (Searcher-Clipper). Its urine sprayed onto a person's shadow causes sores and symptoms of alternating chills and fever. Ancient formulas use Rhinoceros Horn juice, Jichangcao (Polygonum aviculare) juice, Mabiancao (Verbena officinalis) juice, Pear leaf juice, tea leaf powder, Zicao (Arnebiae Radix et Rhizoma) powder, sheep whiskers ash, deer horn powder, or swallow nest soil. Applying any single one of these is effective. Sun Simiao’s *Qianjin Fang* states: I once suffered from this sore in June, and after five or six days of treatment, it did not heal.
