(From *Tang Bencao* [Compendium of Materia Medica of the Tang Dynasty])
[Ji Jie] Su Gong stated: Wo Xue Shi (Snow-Gripping Stone) is produced in Songli Mountain, Xuzhou. It is found more than a zhang underground, amidst rotting earth and stones. It is fine and powdery like flour, with a yellowish-white color. Locals call it Wo Xue Shi, also known as Hua Gong Shi or Shi Nao (Stone Brain), claiming that ingesting it grants longevity.
Li Shizhen stated: Carefully examining Dugu Tao’s *Dan Fang Jing Yuan* [Mirror Source of Alchemical Furnaces], it records: Wo Xue Shi is produced in Qutan Marsh. During extreme cold, marrow-like substances grow on the stones, which can be harvested. One fen of this stone can coalesce ten liang of mercury. Furthermore, consulting Nan Gongcong’s *Gulou Shen Shu* [Divine Book of Mount Gulu], it states: Shi Ye (Stone Liquid) is the fatty liquid of Dan Fan (Alum). This stone is found in Qutan Marsh, Xiangyang; some are in mountains, others in water, appearing white and coarse/sticky. In winter, fatty liquid exudes from its surface, vanishing when exposed to sunlight in the morning. It should be scraped off with a copper knife before sunrise and placed in a vessel, heated until red-hot, then taken out and formed into pills using mulberry juice. Wherever the liquid touches, it turns iron-colored. Using one zhu of this liquid can neutralize four liang of quicksilver; heating it in a vessel causes it to dry instantly. However, this liquid is rare, cherished by divine principles, requiring sacrifice of a white rooster and clear wine during collection. Both Mount Hua and Mount Song produce this stone, but only Qutan yields the fatty liquid. Additionally, Xiong Taigu’s *Ji Yue Ji* mentions: Ten liang of Dan Shan Fan (Alum from Dan Mountain) can dry ten liang of mercury. This represents the essence of human investigation into things, revealing the secrets of heaven and earth. Based on these three texts, Wo Xue Shi refers to the liquid form of stone, not the stone brain within the earth. What Su Gong described is indeed the stone brain. His description aligns with the *Bie Lu* [Separate Record] and Tao Hongjing’s annotations on Shi Nao, and thus should not be re-annotated here. Further examination reveals that various texts use either "Shi" (Stone) or "Fan Shi" (Alum Stone); it is unclear which is correct, as these two characters are often confused in ancient books. Reasoning logically, it seems to be Alum Stone, because Stone is toxic, whereas Alum Stone is non-toxic.
[Qi Wei] Taste: Sweet. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic.
[ Zhu Zhi] Treats chronic cold accumulation syndromes; promotes physical lightness and longevity. Excessive consumption induces heat sensations (*Tang Bencao*). Treats severe wind sores (Li Shizhen).
