[Names] Wasong (from *Tang Bencao*), Wahua (from *Bencao Gangmu*), Xiangtiancao (from *Bencao Gangmu*); the red variety is named Tieji Boluomencao (from *Bencao Gangmu*) and Tianwang Tietacao.
Li Shizhen stated: The name is indeed difficult to understand.
Su Song said: Wasong, resembling pine cones in layered arrangement, hence the name.
[Collection and Explanation] Tao Gong said: Zoyehecao grows on roofs in Shangdang, resembling a tuft of grass. When first sprouting, it is over one chi high; from afar, it looks like a planted pine tree.
Ma Zhi said: It is found everywhere, growing on old tiled roofs. The herbs are harvested in the sixth and seventh lunar months and dried in the sun.
[Flavor and Properties] Sour, neutral, non-toxic.
Li Shizhen said: According to *Gengxin Yuce*: Xiangtiancao is Wasong, a yin herb. It grows on roof tiles and in crevices of deep mountains. The stem is round and sharp like lacquer; the abaxial surface of leaves has white hairs. It is highly toxic. Ash derived from burning it, when leached with water and used as hair wash, causes hair loss. If it enters the eyes, it causes blindness. Crushed juice can coagulate caoshā (grass sand) and fix realgar, orpiment, cinnabar, mercury, and alum. This description contradicts the *Bencao* records stating it is non-toxic and promotes hair growth; this discrepancy must be noted.
[Indications] Dryness and pain in the mouth, bloody dysentery with undigested food, hemostasis (from *Tang Bencao*). It is a key medicine for making ointments to promote eyebrow and hair growth (Ma Zhi). It regulates the meridians in women (Su Song). For lower gastrointestinal bleeding, burn to ash and administer one qian with water. Additionally, applied topically to various non-healing sores (Li Shizhen).
[Prescriptions] One old prescription, nine new prescriptions.
Sandy strangury: Wasong (i.e., rootless grass on roofs), decoct into a strong soup, fumigate and wash the lower abdomen while hot. Patency is achieved in about two hours (*Jingyan Liangfang*).
Promote menstruation and break blood stasis: Five liang of active Wahua from dark corners of old houses (decocted into paste), one liang of Danggui Xu (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Radicula) and Ganqi (Resina Ferulae) burned until smoke ceases, two qian of Dangmenshi (Musk). Grind into powder, mix with jujube pulp to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take seventy pills per dose, washed down with Honghua (Carthami Flos) decoction (*Zhaixuan Fang*).
Dye beard and hair black: One and a half jin of dry Wasong and two jin of raw Sesame Oil, decoct together until charred, then grind into powder. Separately, soak and apply raw Sesame Oil; this is very effective (*Shengji Lu*).
Head wind with dandruff: Dry Wasong, burn to ash, leach with water, and wash with the hot liquid. Not more than six or seven times are needed (*Shenghui Fang*).
Swollen and painful gums: Equal parts of Wahua and Bai Fan (Alumen), decoct in water. Rinse the mouth for immediate effect (*Zhaixuan Fang*).
Cracked lips with sores: Wahua and fresh ginger, add a little salt, crush and apply (*Zhaixuan Fang*).
Scalds and burns: Wasong and fresh Baiye (Cupressi Cacumen), crush together and apply. If dry, grind into powder (*Yifang Jiangyao*).
Non-healing moxibustion wounds: Wasong, dried in shade and ground into powder. First wash with Huai Zhi (Celtis Branch) and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) decoction, then sprinkle the powder. Immediate effect (*Jisheng Milan*).
Malignant sores not healing: Same formula as above.
Dog bite from rabid dog: Wasong and Xionghuang (Realgar), grind and apply. Prevents onset (*Shengsheng Bian*).
[Appendix] Ziyi (from *Shiyi*)
Chen Cangqi said: Bitter, non-toxic. Treats sudden jaundice and heat, yellow eyes with heaviness, promotes urination, and stops heat dysentery; taken boiled. Ash leached with water, used to wash the head to promote hair growth. This is Guzhu Jin Hua (Ancient Wood Brocade Flower), found on stones and tiles, suitable for dyeing brown.
