[Names] Yan (from *Mao Shi*), Long.
Shizhen says: The meaning of the names is unclear.
[Collected Explanations] Gong says: It is a creeping plant. Its seedlings and leaves are similar to those of grape but smaller; some stems can be as thick as a bowl. In winter, only the leaves wither while the vines remain alive. The vine juice tastes sweet, and the fruit tastes sweet and sour; it is also known as Qiansui Teng.
Song says: The fruit grows in Jiangdong, resembles grapes, is slender and sour in taste.
Shizhen says: It grows wild in forests and fields, and can also be propagated by cuttings. Its vines, leaves, flowers, and fruits are indistinguishable from grapes. The fruits are small and round, not very purple. The *Book of Songs* states "Eat Yan in the sixth month," referring to this plant. When blowing on its stem, gas escapes accompanied by juice, resembling...
[Corrections] Zangqi says: Gong's annotation that Qiansui Teng is Yan is false. Qiansui Teng has vines like kudzu, with white undersides on leaves and red edible fruits. Yan vines, when chopped...
