[Names] Jugu (from *Mingyi Bielu*).
[Explanation] *Mingyi Bielu* states: Soudushu grows in the valleys of Xiong'er Mountain, as well as in old mound ruins in fields. It is called "Dang" when harvested in April. Li Dangshuo: Soudushu is also known as Yanglu, Mujing, or Kongshu. Its bark is white and hollow, with frequent nodes. The fruit resembles that of Gouqi (Goji berry), ripens in winter, is red, and tastes sweet and bitter. By later dynasties, no one recognized it. This is not the Yanglu growing on fences and walls.
Su Gong said: Soudushu, resembling Kongshu, grows into a tree about one zhang high, with white bark. Its fruits ripen in the eighth and ninth months, are red, resemble Gouqi, and grow in pairs opposite each other; they taste bitter, differing from Kongshu. Kongshu is indeed Yanglu, whose fruits are pods, unlike Soudushu.
Ma Zhi said: Although Soudushu and Gouqi are similar, Soudushu has thorns while Gouqi does not; this is the distinction.
Su Song said: Soudushu also bears the name Jugu, just as Gouqi bears the name Digux (Earth Bone); thus, they should be similar. It is rarely used in medical formulas, so careful differentiation is necessary.
Wang Ji said: Regarding Li Dang's statement that only the fruit of Soudushu resembles that of Gouqi, without mentioning the trees being similar, Ma Zhi inferred that since the fruits are similar, the trees must also be similar, distinguishing them by the presence or absence of thorns. Su Song further suspected their similarity based on the names Jugu and Digux. However, it is unknown that Gouqi does have thorns; there are simply more thorns when small and fewer when large. There are many cases of different substances sharing the same name in herbal texts, let alone sharing just the character "Gu" (Bone). To argue based on this is particularly far-fetched.
Li Shizhen said: Wang Ji's judgment seems correct, yet he himself could not definitively identify what substance this actually is.
[Favor and Toxicity] Pungent, Cold, Non-toxic. *Mingyi Bielu* states: Bitter, slightly Cold.
Xu Zhicai said: Loulu serves as its guiding herb (shi yao).
[Indications] Clears heat in the skin, eliminates pathogenic factors, stops enuresis, and promotes diuresis (from *Shennong Bencao Jing*).
Clears heat in the stomach, directs rebellious Qi downward. Can be used as a bathing decoction (from *Mingyi Bielu*. Li Shizhen notes: According to Sun Simiao's *Qianjin Fang*, treating thirty-six lower jiao disorders in women, Cheng...)
