[Names] Zaozi Wood (Chisel Wood).
Li Shizhen stated: This wood is tough and durable, suitable for making chisel handles, hence its common name is Zaozi Wood. Medical texts all write it as "Zuo Mu" (Oak-like Wood), likely due to a misunderstanding of this meaning. "Zuo" refers to the names of Quercus acutissima or Quercus mongolica, not this specific wood.
[Collected Explanations] Chen Cangqi said: Zuo Mu grows in the southern regions, has small leaves, and is the material currently used to make combs.
Li Shizhen said: This tree is found in mountains everywhere, growing up to over one zhang tall. The leaves are small with fine serrations, smooth and tough. Both the wood and leaf axils have thorns, and it remains evergreen through winter. In May, it opens tiny white flowers but does not bear fruit. Its wood grain is entirely white.
Bark
[Properties and Flavor] Bitter, neutral, non-toxic. Li Shizhen added: Sour, astringent.
[Indications] Jaundice (Huangdan Bing): Burn the bark into powder, take one fangcun bi (a traditional measure) with water, three times a day (Chen Cangqi). Treats Shulou (Scrofula/Lymphatic Tuberculosis) complicated by difficult childbirth, promoting delivery and unblocking orifices.
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Shulou: Five sheng of Zuo Mu Bark, ten dou of water, decocted to yield two sheng of juice for oral administration. Old necrotic tissue will be expelled, leading to recovery. This is the prescription of Zhang Ziren (*Waitai Miyao*).
Difficult Childbirth in Women: Cuisheng Zuo Mu Yin (Labor-Inducing Zuo Mu Decoction): Effective for malpresentation (transverse or breech) or fetal death in utero. This is the prescription of Zhang Buyu from Shangcai. Take a large handful of big Zuo Mu branches (one chi long, washed clean), five cun of large Gancao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*), cut both into inch-length segments. Place them in a new clay pot with three and a half sheng of freshly drawn water. Seal tightly with three layers of paper. Decoct using alternating mild and strong heat until reduced to one and a half sheng. When the woman feels heavy pain in the waist and abdomen and is ready to give birth, drink one small cup warm. She will feel relief in the chest and epigastrium. If thirsty, drink another cup. After drinking three to four cups, she will feel pressure in the lower body and deliver naturally, without other suffering. Do not go into labor too early, nor allow midwives to interfere recklessly (*Furen Liangfang*).
Leaves
[Indications] Swelling, toxins, carbuncles, and sores (Li Shizhen).
[Attached Prescriptions] One new prescription.
Zuo Mu Yin: Treats various types of swelling, carbuncles, and back abscesses. Use four liang of dried Zuo Mu Leaves, one liang each of dried Lotus Leaf central pedicle, dried Daylily Root, Gancao Jie (Licorice Joint, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*), and Diyü (Sanguisorba Root, *Sanguisorbae Radix*). Finely chop. For each dose, use half a liang, add two bowls of water, decoct to one bowl. Take once in the morning and once in the evening. For established abscesses, pus and blood will gradually dry up; for unestablished ones, the toxin will dissipate naturally. Avoid all...
