[Names] Shaonao.
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: Shaonao (Camphor) is produced in Shaozhou and Zhangzhou. Its appearance resembles Longnao (Borneol), white as snow, being the resinous paste of the camphor tree. Hu Yan in *Shenglian Fang* (Method of Refining) stated: The method for decocting Shaonao: Use fresh slices of camphor wood, soak them well water for three days and nights, then boil in a pot, stirring frequently with a willow stick. When the liquid reduces by half and white frost appears on the willow stick, filter out the dregs and pour the liquid into a earthenware basin. After overnight, it naturally solidifies into blocks. Although camphor trees exist elsewhere, people there do not know how to extract the camphor.
Another method for refining Shaonao: Use a copper basin, sprinkle powder made from old wall earth at the bottom, then layer a thickness of Shaonao, followed by another layer of wall earth, repeating this four or five times. Place mint leaves on top of the earth, cover with another basin, seal tightly with yellow mud, and slowly roast over fire. One must judge by intuition, ensuring the heat is neither too strong nor too weak. Do not allow the volatile essence to escape. Upon cooling and removal, the camphor sublimes to the upper basin. By sublimating two or three times, it can serve as Pian Nao (flake camphor).
[Preparation] Li Shizhen stated: For use, take one tael of Shaonao, place between two bowls, seal the rim with wet paper, and heat alternately with mild and strong fire for about half an hour. Remove and use after cooling. Another method: For one tael of Shaonao, use 6 qian of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), 4 qian of Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) and Xixin (Asari Radix), 2 qian of Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) and Mimenghua (Buddlejae Flos), and 1 qian of Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Huaihua (Sophorae Flos). Line a new earthenware bowl with fir wood chips at the bottom, place the herbs on top, add half a cup of water, sprinkle the Shaonao over it, cover with another bowl, seal the rim, and simmer over fire. When the water dries, open it; the camphor will sublime to the upper bowl. Sweep it down with a feather; its shape resembles pine resin, suitable for eye drops treating wind-heat. People often mix adulterated Shaonao, so distinction is necessary.
[Properties and Flavor] Acrid, hot, non-toxic.
[Indications] Opens orifices and joints, promotes the flow of stagnant qi, treats sudden evil qi attack, cholera with heart and abdominal pain, cold-damp Hong Kong Foot (podagra/eczema of the foot), scabies, tinea, and pruritus, dental caries, kills insects and repels moths. Placing it in shoes removes Hong Kong Foot (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: Shaonao is purely yang, sharing properties with Yan Xiao (Saltpeter); it generates fire in water, making the flame more intense. It is now widely used in alchemical furnaces and fireworks. Its acrid, hot, and aromatic penetrating nature derives from the Qi of Dragon Fire, eliminating dampness and killing insects, which are its strengths. Thus, burning its smoke to fumigate clothes, baskets, mats, and bamboo blinds repels bedbugs and insect damage.
(Text gap here, likely referring to wound treatment): Bandage with silk gauze; leaving it for over a month is excellent. Formula from Wang Xi's *Yilin Jiyao*: Treats Hong Kong Foot swelling and pain. Use 2 liang of Shaonao and 3 liang of Wutou (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), grind into powder, make pills the size of bullet seeds using vinegar paste. Place one pill on the sole of the foot, apply mild heat underneath, cover with clothing and blankets. Effectiveness is indicated when sweat flows like saliva.
[Attached Formulas] Three new formulas.
Pediatric Alopecia Tinea: 1 qian of Shaonao, 2 qian of Huajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), 2 liang of Zhima (Sesami Semen), grind into powder. Wash with pig-skin decotion, then apply to the affected area.
Dental Pain from Worms: From *Puji Fang*: Use equal parts of Shaonao and Zhusha (Cinnabaris), apply to teeth for miraculous effect. Yu Jushi's *Xuanqi Fang*: Use equal parts of Shaonao, Huangdan (Lithargyrum), and Feizao (Soapberry, peeled and pitted), grind uniformly, bind with honey into pills. Insert into the tooth cavity.
