[Ji Jie / Collected Explanations] Chen Cangqi stated: Gantu (Sweet Earth) is produced in Anxi and Longmen of Dongjing. It is obtained by clarifying the bottom layer of soil, washed until fine like ash for consumption, or mixed with water to coat clothes to remove oil stains.
[Qi Wei / Odor and Taste] Non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi / Indications] Treats poisoning from herbs and various fungi; take powdered earth mixed with hot water orally (Chen Cangqi).
(From *Bencao Gangmu* / Compendium of Materia Medica)
[Qi Wei / Odor and Taste] Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Zhu Zhi / Indications] Mainly treats scalds and burns; apply powdered earth externally (Li Shizhen).
[Fu Fang / Supplementary Prescriptions] Three new prescriptions.
Ya Xuan Gan Chuang (Gum disease with ulcers): Grind Chitu (Red Earth) together with Jingjie Ye (Schizonepeta Leaf), apply to the affected area three times a day. (*Puji Fang*)
Feng Zhen Sao Yang (Wind rash with severe itching): For unbearable itching due to wind rash, grind Chitu into powder, take one qian orally on an empty stomach with warm wine. (*Yuyao Yuan Fang*)
Shen Mian Yin Wen Ci Po (Broken tattoo marks on body and face): Mix Chitu with vinegar, apply to the area, replace when dry, continue until the black pigment disappears. (*Qianjin Fang*)
(From *Bencao Shiyi* / Supplement to Materia Medica)
[Shi Ming / Explanation of Names] Chen Cangqi stated: Zhang Sikong said: Soil above three chi is called Fen (excrement/waste); soil below three chi is called Tu (earth). When using Huangtu (Yellow Earth), remove the upper foul matter to prevent it from mixing into Ke Shui (external/foreign water).
[Qi Wei / Odor and Taste] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
Chen Cangqi stated: Long-term contact with earth qi causes yellow complexion. Disturbing the earth violates the Di Mai (Earth Veins), causing Qi rebellion and body swelling. Disturbing the earth violates spiritual taboos, causing people to develop swelling and sores.
[Zhu Zhi / Indications] Treats cold-heat dysentery, red-and-white dysentery, heat toxin accumulation in the abdomen causing cramping pain, and hematochezia. Take dry earth, boil in water for three to five boils, filter out the dregs, and drink one to two sheng while warm. It also antidotes various drug poisonings, meat poison, Hekou Jiao Du (Aconite poison), and wild mushroom poison (Chen Cangqi).
[Fa Ming / Enlightenment] Li Shizhen stated: According to Liu Fang's *Biography of Qian Yi*: During the Yuanfeng era, Prince Yi Guo suffered from convulsions (Yong). Imperial physicians could not cure him. The Eldest Princess recommended Qian Yi, who prescribed Huangtu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction), resulting in recovery. Emperor Shenzong summoned Qian Yi and asked about the mechanism of curing illness with yellow earth. Qian Yi replied: "Earth overcomes Water; when Wood achieves balance, Wind naturally recedes." The Emperor was pleased and promoted him to Ta Yi Cheng.
Furthermore, according to *Yijian Zhi*: Minister Wu Shaoshi fell ill, wasting away for months. Every time food entered his throat, he felt as if ten thousand insects were attacking, causing both itching and pain. Everyone diagnosed it as Lao Zhai (consumption/tuberculosis) and invited the famous physician Zhang Rui. Zhang Rui instructed him to fast the next morning, sent soldiers to fetch Yellow Earth from a public road ten li away, stirred it with two sheng of warm wine, and administered one hundred pills. The patient felt unbearable pain, but upon defecating, expelled over a thousand Ma Huang (horse leeches/parasites), writhing, half of which were dead. Wu Shaoshi was exhausted but stabilized after three days of recuperation. Zhang Rui explained: "In summer, while campaigning, you drank a cup of stream water due to dryness and thirst, and something entered your throat, causing this disease. Parasites entering the viscera will inevitably multiply. When hungry, they gather to suck essence and blood; when full, they disperse in the organs. Merely killing them without removing them is useless. Therefore, I asked you to fast to lure them. Deprived of the taste of earth for long and attracted by wine, they gathered all at once when hungry, allowing for a complete washout." The minister was greatly pleased, rewarded him generously, and sent him back with courtesy.
[Fu Fang / Supplementary Prescriptions] Two old prescriptions, ten new ones.
Xiao Er Chi Tu (Child eating earth癖): Use a piece of dry Yellow Earth, grind into powder, and take with strong decoction of Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction). (*Jiuji Fang*)
Wu Sha Jing Feng (Black Wind Convulsion): For infantile convulsion where the whole body turns black, urgently push downwards. Take one bowl of Yellow Earth, grind into powder, add one zhong of aged vinegar, stir-fry until hot, wrap in cloth, and apply as a compress to guide the pathogen down to the feet. Pricking the skin is advisable. (*Xiao'er Mijue*)
Zu Huan Xin Tong (Sudden Heart Pain): Draw a "Wang" character on the ground, scoop the central earth, mix with water, and drink one sheng. Effective. (Chen Cangqi *Bencao*)
Mu Zu Wu Jian (Sudden Blindness): Stir Yellow Earth in water, clarify, and use to wash the eyes. (*Zhouhou Fang*)
Niu Ma Rou Du Ji Gan Du (Poison from Ox/Horse Meat and Liver Poison): Take three sheng of good earth, boil in water, and drink one sheng of the clear liquid for immediate recovery. Another method: Add one-cun cut human hair during boiling, as hair connects to the Liver and expels toxins. (*Zhouhou Fang*)
Nei Zhi Tong Zhong (Internal Hemorrhoid Swelling and Pain): Use one liang each of Chaoyang Huangtu (Sun-facing Yellow Earth), Huanglian Mo (Coptis Powder), and Pixiao (Mirabilite). Grind together with Pig Gallbladder Juice (Zhudan Zhi) into a paste. Form pills the size of a jujube daily, insert into the anus, remove after one night with stool. Internally take pills made of Wumei (Mume Fruit) and Huanglian (Coptis). (Sun Shi *Jixiao Fang*)
Dian Puo Yu Si (Severe Trauma/Fall): For all injuries, falls from height, crushing by wood/stone, falling from horses/carriages, with stagnant blood and near-death state, revive using this method. Steam five sheng of pure earth, wrap in old cloth to make two packs, and alternate applying hot compresses. Do not make too hot to avoid burning skin. Stop when pain ceases. This is a miraculous prescription. (Sun Simiao *Qianjin Fang*)
Zhang Chuang Wei Po (Bruise from beating not yet broken): Dry Yellow Earth powder, mix with Tong Niao (Boy's Urine) and Ji Zi Qing (Egg White), apply to the area. Reapply when dry, wash off with hot water, repeat dozens of times until purple turns red. Also apply to both groins to prevent blood attacking the yin. (*Shesheng Fang*)
Tang Huo Shang Zhuo (Scald and Burn): Mix Yellow Earth with vinegar, apply to the burn. (*Tan Yeweng Fang*)
Wu Gong She Shang (Centipede Bite): Draw a "Wang" character on the ground, take earth from inside, and sprinkle on the wound. Immediate recovery. (*Jijian Fang*)
Feng Yi Ding She (Bee/Ant Sting): Take earth from the ground with the back of the hand, apply to the sting, or mix with vinegar. (*Qianjin Fang*)
Qu Niao Chuang (Urticaria-like sore): Draw the shape of Qu Niao (a mythical creature) on the ground, carefully scrape earth from the center with a knife, mix with saliva, and apply. Apply again for recovery. Sun Simiao said: "I suffered from this ailment for five or six days without healing. Someone taught me this method, and it cured me. Thus I know that all things interact mutually, though I do not understand the reason." (*Qianjin Fang*)
