(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Collected Explanations]
Chen Cangqi stated: Jiajian (Turtle Shell Paste), made by burning various herbs along with fine fruits and flowers into ash, mixing them with wax to form lip balm. Its therapeutic indications are similar to those of Jiaxiang (Ambergris-like substance from turtle shell). Those stored for three years are superior.
Li Shizhen stated: Jiajian is prepared by processing Jiaxiang together with Chenxiang (Agarwood), Shexiang (Musk), and other medicinal substances and floral materials. It can be used as lip balm or for incense burning. The line in the poetry of Li Yishan (Li Shangyin) of the Tang Dynasty, "Chenxiang Jiajian serves as the court torch," refers to this substance.
[Flavor and Properties] Pungent, Warm, Non-toxic.
[Therapeutic Indications] Treats Onychocryptosis (Ingrown Nail/Paronychia), infantile scalp sores, perioral ulcers, angular cheilitis, postauricular tinea faciei (cracks behind the ear resembling a crescent moon), and wounds inflicted by insects, bees, snakes, and scorpions; apply externally as a poultice. (Chen Cangqi)
(From *Mingyi Bielu* [Record of Famous Physicians], Lower Grade)
[Collected Explanations]
Tao Hongjing stated: Field snails (*Cipangopaludina chinensis*) live in paddy fields and along the banks of lakes and ditches. They are round in shape, as large as pears or oranges, and smaller ones like peaches or plums. People boil and eat them.
Su Baosheng stated: Their appearance resembles snails but is more pointed and elongated, greenish-yellow in color, harvested in spring and summer.
Li Shizhen stated: Snails belong to the genus *Unio* (freshwater mussels). Their shells have spiral patterns. Their flesh varies according to the waxing and waning of the moon; thus, Wang Chong said, "As the moon wanes in the sky, the snail diminishes in the abyss." The *Shuogua* chapter of the *I Ching* states: "Li (Fire trigram) represents snails, mussels, turtles, soft-shelled turtles, and crabs." This is because they are hard on the outside and soft on the inside.

[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, Greatly Cold, Non-toxic.
[Therapeutic Indications] Treats redness, swelling, and pain in the eyes due to heat; relieves thirst (*Mingyi Bielu*). Boiled juice treats heat conditions and resolves alcohol intoxication. Insert powdered Zhenzhu (Pearl) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) into the meat; after a while, extract the juice and instill it into the eyes to relieve eye pain. Promotes urination and clears damp-heat; treats Jaundice. Mashed and applied to the umbilicus, it guides heat downward, treats Jin Kou Li (Dysentery with inability to eat), and resolves water qi obstruction in strangury. Treats Scrofula and Tinea. (Li Shizhen)
[Attached Prescriptions] Three old prescriptions, twenty-one new prescriptions.
Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) with incessant drinking day and night and frequent urination: *Xin Jing* records: Use five sheng of field snails and one dou of water, soak overnight, and drink when thirsty. Change the water and snails daily. Alternatively, boil and consume the juice, which is also excellent. *Shenghui Fang* records: Use two sheng of glutinous rice, cook into a thin porridge with three sheng of water, add the snails inside. Wait until the snails have eaten all the porridge and exude foam. Collect this liquid and drink it at will; immediate effect is achieved.
Liver Heat causing Red Eyes: *Yaoxing Lun* records: Take seven large field snails, wash them clean, and raise them in fresh water to remove mud and impurities. Rinse with one sheng of water and remove. Place in a clean vessel, put a little salt flower inside the shell aperture to collect the natural juice, and instill into the eyes. Use one by one, then release them.
Rotating Margins Wind Eye (Blepharitis): Same method as above, but use Tonglv (Malachite Green) instead of salt flower.
Alcohol-induced Oral Ulcers: Boil snails and mussels, drink the juice. (*Shenghui Fang*)
Unconsciousness from Alcohol Intoxication: Boil aquatic snails and mussels with Congbai (Scallion) and Chidou (Fermented Soybean), eat and drink the juice to resolve intoxication. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)

Grind Jizhua Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) into fine powder, place it inside the operculum, wait for it to dissolve into water. Clean the anus with strong tea, sweep the area with a chicken feather dipped in the solution. Support the prolapsed rectum with soft silk; it will naturally not recur. (*Deshengtang Jingyan Fang*)
Regurgitation and Vomiting: Wash field snails and raise in water until they expel mud. Clarify and sun-dry to half dryness, form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills each time, washed down with Huoxiang Tang (Pogostemon Decoction). Grinding the shell and taking it orally is also acceptable. (*Jingyan Fang*)
Water Qi Edema: Use equal parts of large field snails, Dasuan (Garlic), and Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), mash into a paste, and apply to the umbilicus. Water drains through urine and feces. Citizens of Xiangshan County suffered from this and were cured by this prescription. (Qiu Yuan, *Baishi*)
Jiu Dan and Other Jaundices: Raise field snails in water for several days, remove mud, take out and crush raw. Mix with good wine, filter through cloth, and drink the juice. Take three times daily; self-healing occurs. (*Shouyu Shenfang*)

In summer, leave for one night; in winter, seven nights. It naturally becomes liquid. Apply frequently; roots are eliminated over time. Another method: One large field snail, insert 3 fen of Shexiang (Musk), bury in open ground for seventy-seven days, then retrieve. Inspect and wipe the affected area, apply ink, then wash again. The areas where ink remains indicate the lesion openings; instill snail juice there. Cured in three to five applications.
Scrofula Ulceration: Burn field snails with flesh until carbonized (preserving properties), mix with Xiangyou (Sesame Oil), and apply. (*Jiyao Fang*)
Ding Chuang Evil Swelling: Insert Bingpian (Borneol) into field snails, dissolve into water, and instill onto the sore. (*Puji Fang*)
