(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Nomenclature] Alias "Duyao" (Solely Shaking).
Su Song stated: The trunk resembles that of a poplar but is slightly white, hence the name Baiyang (White Poplar), not white like powder.
Li Shizhen stated: Zheng Qiao in *Tongzhi* mentioned: Baiyang (White Poplar), also known as Gaofei, shares the same name as [Certain] Yang. Currently, the common people generally refer to [Certain] Yang as Baiyang (White Poplar), and Baiyang (White Poplar) also earns this shared name because it shakes alone in the wind.
[Collection and Explanation] Su Gong stated: Select leaves that are round and large, with small petioles, which move automatically without wind.
Chen Zangqi stated: Baiyang (White Poplar) is extremely abundant in the northern regions; people plant it among tombs, where the trees grow large with white bark. Those that move without wind are...
Su Song stated: It is found everywhere now, especially in the north. The plants are very tall and robust, with leaves round like pear leaves, white bark, and wood resembling poplar. Collection has no fixed time. Cui Bao's *Gujin Zhu* states: "Baiyang (White Poplar) leaves are round, Qingyang (Green Poplar) leaves are long," which is correct.
Su Song stated: Shaanxi has many of them; residents between Yong and Yao often use this wood for repairs. Its roots sprout easily; when chopping the tree, broken branches falling into the soil take root, making it easy to propagate abundantly. This is due to the suitability of the land. When the wind arrives, the leaves make a sound like heavy rain. To say they move without wind is incorrect. However, when the wind is slight, leaves at isolated positions often shake alone, because their petioles are slender and long, and the leaves are heavy, causing this by necessity of their form.
Li Shizhen stated: The Baiyang (White Poplar) tree is tall and robust. The leaves are round like pear leaves, thick and large with pointed tips, green and glossy on the front, very white on the back, with serrated edges. The wood texture is fine and white, with a firm and straight nature; used as beams, they never bend or twist. It belongs to the same category as [Certain] Yang but is a different species; its therapeutic efficacy is largely similar. Young leaves can also be used to survive famine, and old leaves can serve as ingredients for yeast.

[Preparation] Lei Xiao stated: Whenever used, scrape off the rough bark with a copper knife, then steam it from Si hour to Wei hour. Place in a cloth bag, hang it in the east corner of the house, wait until dry, and then use.
