【发明】时珍曰∶百部亦天门冬之类,故皆治肺病杀虫。但百部气温而不寒,寒嗽宜之;

(Recorded in the Middle Category of *Bie Lu*)
[Names] Po Fu Cao (from *Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao*), Ye Tian Dong (from *Ben Cao Gang Mu*).
Li Shizhen said: Its roots, when numerous, connect in clusters of hundreds or tens, resembling military formations; hence the name "Bai Bu" (Hundred Sections).
[Collection and Explanation] Tao Hongjing said: It grows everywhere in mountains and wilds. Its roots are connected in dozens, resembling *Tian Dong* (Asparagus Root) but more bitter and potent, differing only in the seedlings. *Bo Wu Zhi* records: In Jiu Zhen Commandery, there is a grass similar to Bai Bu, merely larger. Hanging it over fire to dry, cutting it into four or five cun segments at night, holding it in the mouth to swallow the juice is very effective for sudden coughs, named "Sou Yao" (Cough Medicine). I suspect this is indeed Bai Bu. Because the soil is fertile and moist, it grows large.
Meng Shen said: *Tian Dong* roots have over ten stems, round and short, solid and moist with a sweet taste; Bai Bu has fifty or sixty stems, long and pointed roots that are hollow inside, with a bitter taste, and different vines. Nowadays people mistake *Tian Dong* for Bai Bu, which is unclear.
Su Song said: It is now found in Jiang, Hu, Huai, Shaan, Qi, and Lu regions. Seedlings emerge in spring, growing as vines. Leaves are large, sharp, and long, somewhat resembling bamboo leaves, green on the surface and glossy. Under one root cluster, there are fifteen or sixteen tubers, yellowish-white. Harvested in the second, third, and eighth months, dried in the sun for use.
Li Shizhen said: Bai Bu also has varieties with fine leaves like fennel, with green stems, which can be boiled and eaten when tender. Its roots can be nearly one chi long, plump when fresh, but become shriveled and dry without moisture when dried. When raw, split open, remove the heart, and dry. Zheng Qiao's *Tong Zhi* states its leaves resemble *Shu Yu* (Dioscorea), which is erroneous.
[Processing] Lei Xiao said: Upon collection, split with a bamboo knife, remove the heart, skin, and flowers, divide into dozens of strips, hang under the eaves to wind-dry. Then soak in wine overnight, drain, bake dry, and chop for use. If one clump has eighty-three roots, it is called "Di Xian Miao" (Earth Immortal Sprout). If processed and consumed, it can extend life.
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic.
Zhen Quan said: Sweet, non-toxic.
Da Ming said: Bitter, non-toxic.
Gong said: Slightly cold, slightly toxic.
Li Shizhen said: Bitter, slightly sweet, non-toxic.
[Indications] Cough with rebellious qi. (Roast over fire, soak in wine, and drink) (*Bie Lu*). Treat lung heat, moisten the lungs (Zhen Quan). Treat Chuan Shi Gu Zheng Lao (consumptive disease with bone-steaming fever), treat Gan Ji (pediatric malnutrition syndrome), kill roundworms, tapeworms, pinworms, and all wood-boring insects; burning them kills them instantly. Kill lice, flies, and midges (Da Ming. Tao Hongjing said: Boil in water to wash cattle and dogs to remove lice). Roast over fire, soak in wine, drink on an empty stomach to treat scabies and tinea, remove toxins from insect bites (Meng Shen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen said: Bai Bu belongs to the same category as *Tian Dong*, thus both treat lung diseases and kill parasites. However, Bai Bu is warm in nature and not cold, suitable for cold-type coughs; *Tian Dong* is cold in nature and not warm, suitable for heat-type coughs. This is their difference.
[Attached Prescriptions] Five old prescriptions, five new prescriptions.
Sudden Cough: Zhang Wenzhong's prescription: Soak Bai Bu roots in wine. Take one sheng warm each time, three times a day. Ge Hong's prescription: Equal parts of Bai Bu and fresh ginger, crushed to extract juice, decocted and taken two he. *Xu Shi Quan Fang*: Crush Bai Bu vine roots to extract natural juice, mix equally with honey, boil with boiling water to make a paste, hold in mouth and swallow. *Pu Ji Fang*: Treat sudden incessant cough. Hang Bai Bu roots over fire to dry, hold in mouth to swallow juice, do not let others know.
Pediatric Cold Cough: Bai Bu Wan: Bai Bu (stir-fried), Ma Huang (remove joints) each 7 qian 5 fen (powdered), Xing Ren (remove skin and tips, stir-fried, briefly boiled in water for 3-5 boils, ground into paste). Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of soap seeds. Take 2-3 pills each time, washed down with warm water. (Qian Yi's *Xiao Er* prescription)
Chronic Cough: 20 jin of Bai Bu roots, crush to extract juice, decoct until thick like malt syrup. Take one fang cun bi each time, three times a day. Shen Shi's formula adds 2 jin of honey. *Wai Tai Mi Yao* adds 1 jin of malt syrup. (*Qian Jin Fang*)
Generalized Yellow Edema: Dig fresh Bai Tiao Gen, wash and crush, apply to the navel. Mix half sheng of glutinous rice with half he of water-wine, knead soft, cover on the medicine, wrap tightly with cloth. After one or two days, if alcohol smell appears in the mouth, water will discharge via urination, and edema will subside naturally. Mothing Clothes to Remove Lice: Bai Bu, Qin Jiao, grind to powder. Burn in a bamboo cage to smoke clothes, lice will fall off. Can also boil in water to wash clothes. (*Jing Yan Fang*)
[Appendix] Bai Bing *Bie Lu* says: Bitter, non-toxic. Mainly treats lung cough with rebellious qi, circulates through the five zang organs, preventing various diseases. Also named Yu Xiao, also named Jian Gan. Grows on hills, leaves like small bamboo, roots yellow with white skin. Harvest roots in March and April, dry in the sun.
Li Shizhen said: This herb's flavor and indications are close to Bai Bu, so it is appended here.
