[Names] Hongdou (Red Bean).
Li Shizhen states: According to *Gujin Shihua* (Ancient and Modern Poetry Talks), Xiangsi Zi (Abrus precatorius seed) is round and red. Folklore says: In the past, a person died at the border; his wife missed him deeply, cried under a tree until she died, and thus it was named "Xiangsi" (Love/Yearning). This differs from the Xiangsi Tree on Han Ping's tomb, which refers to interlaced catalpa wood. Some claim it is similar to *Ormosia hosiei* (Sea Red Bean), but it is uncertain if this is accurate.
[Description] Li Shizhen states: Xiangsi Zi grows in the Lingnan region. The tree is over one zhang tall, with white bark. Its leaves resemble those of the locust tree (*Robinia pseudoacacia*), its flowers resemble those of the soap pod (*Gleditsia sinensis*), and its pods resemble those of the hyacinth bean (*Lablab purpureus*). The seeds are the size of small beans, half red and half black, and locals use them to inlay jewelry. Duan Gonglu, in *Buhu Lu*, mentions a vine species; using its seeds to collect borneol is suitable as it prevents the loss of fragrance.
[Properties and Flavor] Bitter, neutral, slightly toxic, induces vomiting.
[Indications] Opens the nine orifices, expels evil qi from the heart and abdomen, relieves headache caused by heat and oppression, treats wind-phlegm and malarial fevers due to miasma, kills all parasites within the abdominal organs and skin, and removes gu poison. Take fourteen seeds, grind them, and ingest; vomiting will occur immediately (Li Shizhen).
[Prescriptions] Three new prescriptions included.
Treating Malarial Fevers with Chills and Heat: Grind fourteen Xiangsi Zi seeds in water and ingest to induce vomiting; recovery follows immediately. (From *Qianjin Fang*).
Treating Cat-Ghost and Wild Pathogenic Influences: When seeing cat-ghosts or hearing strange noises. Use one each of Xiangsi Zi, Ricinus communis seed (Bimazi), and Croton tiglium seed (Badou), along with four zhu of Cinnabar powder (Zhusha) and wax. Pound together into pills the size of sesame seeds and hold in the mouth. Surround the patient with ash, place a bucket of burning ash fire before them, throw the pill into the fire; when it boils, draw a cross on the fire to resolve the gu poison.
Resolving Gu Poison: From *Bixiao Fang*: Use fourteen unperforated Xiangsi Zi seeds, pound into powder. Mix with half a cup of warm water and ingest. Suppress the urge to vomit initially; after a short while, severe vomiting will occur. For mild cases, take only seven seeds. Extremely effective. (From *Waitai Miyao*).

[Description] Li Shizhen states: Zhu Yaozi grows in Liuzhou. It is a vine that produces pods; the seeds inside are as large as a pig's kidney, resembling it closely, three to four cun long, purple in color, and firm in texture. Locals treat it as a local specialty and gift it to the Central Plains.
[Properties and Flavor] Sweet, slightly pungent, non-toxic.
[Indications] Treats all types of sores, toxins, and venomous arrow wounds. Grind finely, take one to two qian with wine, and apply topically (Li Shizhen).
