如前烹治,取死囚食之,入狱亦化如前人。遂辨其狱。窃谓能之有毒,不应如此。然理外之

(Song Dynasty *Tu Jing Ben Cao*)
[Collected Explanations] Su Song stated: The soft-shelled turtle (*Trionyx sinensis*) that lacks the skirt (the soft marginal membrane of the carapace) and whose head and limbs cannot retract is called "Na". It is also written as "Neng" (pronounced like 'nu lai').
[Flesh]
[Flavor and Toxicity] Toxic.
Su Song stated: Consuming it causes dizziness and mental cloudiness. Drinking a decoction of Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩) and Wu Lan (Isatidis Folium, 吴蓝) will immediately resolve the toxicity.
[Carapace]
[Flavor and Toxicity] Slightly toxic.
[Indications] Treats Chuan Shi Lao (Transmitted Corpse Consumption, a chronic consumptive disease similar to tuberculosis), and amenorrhea in women (Su Song).
(Li Shizhen's *Ben Cao Gang Mu*)
[Name Explanation] Three-legged turtle.
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: *Er Ya* records: A turtle with three legs is called "Neng". Guo Pu said: Currently, these are produced in Junshan Pond, Yangxian County, Wuxing Commandery. Some claim this is the form into which Gun transformed after death into a yellow bear; this is incorrect.
[Flesh]
[Flavor and Toxicity] Greatly cold, toxic.
Su Song stated: Consuming it kills people.
Li Shizhen stated: According to Yao Fu's *Geng Ji Bian*: A family in Taicang obtained a three-legged turtle and had a titled lady cook it. After eating, she lay down, and shortly thereafter, her body turned into blood water, leaving only hair behind. Neighbors suspected the lady of murder and sued her. The local magistrate, Huang Tingxuan, could not reach a verdict through interrogation alone. He then obtained another three-legged turtle, instructed the lady to prepare it as before, and had a condemned prisoner eat it. The prisoner entered prison and transformed just like the previous person. Thus, the case was resolved. I privately believe that although "Neng" is toxic, it should not cause bones and flesh to dissolve instantly. However, matters beyond ordinary reason cannot be dismissed by subjective speculation. Furthermore, *Shan Hai Jing* states: In Congshui, there are many three-legged turtles; consuming them prevents gu poison and epidemics. Recently, some people have mistakenly eaten them without harm. Why is this? Perhaps while toxicity harms people, it does not necessarily lead to instantaneous dissolution of bones and flesh.
[Indications] Treats traumatic injuries, relieves pain, and resolves blood stasis; apply externally as a fresh paste. Daoists use it to ward off various repulsive foul qi and dead qi, or draw its image to suppress evil influences.
(*Ben Cao Shi Yi*)
[Collected Explanations] Chen Zangqi stated: Grows in the South Sea. Size like a coin, belly red as blood. It is said that encountering the feet of the "water horse" (a type of aquatic insect) in the water causes one to fall.
Li Shizhen stated: According to *Huainanzi*: When the Zhu Turtle floats on waves, heavy rain is certain.
[Indications] Men who wear it are protected from sword and knife injuries. Women who wear it acquire a charming allure (Chen Zangqi).
