[Names] Green-Cloaked Envoy (from "Compendium").
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen said: The green-haired turtle originates from Neixiang and Tangxian in Nanyang. Currently, only Qizhou presents it as a local tribute. It is kept in water jars, fed with fish and shrimp, and the water is drained during winter. After a long time, hair grows, reaching four or five cun in length. There are golden lines within the hair, the vertebral column has three ridges, and the plastron is ivory-colored. Those the size of a Wuzhu coin are considered authentic. Other turtles may also grow hair after long keeping, but they are larger, lack golden lines, and have a yellowish-black base color, which distinguishes them. The "Book of Southern Qi" records that its color is golden and lovely. It is said that placing it in a bowl can ward off the poison of snakes and scorpions. This is another peculiarity of turtles.
[Processing] Li Shizhen said: This turtle was not used in ancient prescriptions. In recent times, it is often used in nourishing prescriptions, generally having the same efficacy as turtle shell (Gui Ban). It is used in Liu's Xiantian Pill; the method involves taking nine live turtles, placing two live carp in a cauldron, adding water, covering with a rice sieve, steaming the turtles on the sieve until cooked, then taking out the meat and drying it. The shells are still roasted with animal fat (Su) until yellow for medicinal use. Some methods use the shell, meat, head, and neck together.
