[Preparation] Chen Zangqi stated: This is obtained by burying the placenta underground for seven or eight years until it liquefies, becoming clear and transparent like ice. People in the southern regions mix licorice root (Gancao), cimicifuga rhizome (Shengma), and other herbs, seal them in a bottle, and bury it underground. After three to five years, they dig it up and use it as medicine.
[Flavor and Nature] Pungent, cool, non-toxic.
[Indications] Erysipelas in children, various heat-toxin syndromes, persistent alternating chills and fever, delirious speech, erection of hair on the head without roots, deficiency-type distension and fullness, and epidemic febrile diseases. Drinking this yields immediate results (Chen Zangqi). For chronic regurgitation (Fanwei), drinking one cup may result in the expulsion of parasites.
[Names] Mingdi (Life Umbilical Cord). Li Shizhen stated: While the fetus is in the mother's womb, the umbilical cord connects to the placenta, and fetal respiration follows the mother's rhythm. After birth, once the umbilical cord is cut, a trace of true Yuan Qi belongs to the Mingmen Dantian. The dried umbilical cord falls off naturally, much like a melon detaching from its stem. Therefore, the umbilical cord is the "life stem" of humans. Because it lies between the heart and the kidneys, directly anterior to the Shenque acupoint and posterior to the Mingmen acupoint, it is called the umbilicus (Qi). The character "Qi" implies alignment or center.
[Indications] Ingested as a powder after calcination to stop malaria (Chen Zangqi). Resolves fetal toxins; applied externally to treat omphalitis (umbilical sores).
[Attached Prescriptions] Three new prescriptions.
1. For umbilical discharge that does not dry up: Wrap the fallen umbilical cord in cotton, burn it to ash, grind into powder (one qian), mix with powder of Angelica sinensis root head (one qian) and musk (one zi), and apply topically. (Quanyou Xinjian)
2. To preemptively resolve fetal toxins: On the thirteenth day after birth, take the infant's own severed umbilical cord, burn it to ash, and administer mixed with breast milk. This can prevent smallpox. A small amount of cinnabar (Zhusha) may be added. (Baoyou Daquan)
3. For measles-induced wind and red eyes: Take the blood from the newborn's umbilical cord while warm and apply it to the affected area. This is highly effective. (Haishang Fang)
[Names] Penis. Li Shizhen stated: The human penis is not used as medicine. Tao Zongyi's *Zhuogeng Lu* records: A man named Shen from Hangzhou, whose adultery was exposed, cut off his own genitals with a knife. The wound bled for a month without healing. Someone advised him to find the severed part, crush it into powder, and ingest it with wine. He recovered within a few days. From this, we see that those undergoing castration (entering the silkworm chamber) must know this method. Hence, it is recorded here.
[Indications] For wounds following castration that fail to heal (Li Shizhen).
