[Names] Flat snail.
Li Shizhen says: Xian (Clam) is this type of bivalve. The inside of the shell is smooth and shiny, resembling the light of the rising sun. The *Book of Sui* records: Liu Zhan's father, Liu Xian, had a fondness for eating clams and referred to them as flat snails.
[Collected Explanations] Chen Cangqi says: They are found everywhere. Small like mussels, black in color. They can predict wind and rain, flying with their shells.
Li Shizhen says: They are abundant in streams and lakes. There are many varieties, varying in size and thickness. Fishermen mostly consume them.
Meat
[Properties and Flavors] Sweet, salty, cold nature, non-toxic.
Chen Cangqi says: Slightly toxic. Overconsumption may induce coughing and cause cold qi to damage the kidneys.
[Therapeutic Actions] Treats epidemic febrile diseases (Shiqi), opens the appetite, suppresses toxicity from Dan Shi pills (mineral drugs) and carbuncles, drains dampness, promotes lactation. Best consumed when stewed with fermented grain residue. Freshly soaked juice applied externally to wash carbuncles (Su Gong).
Crushed Shells
[Properties and Flavors] Salty, warm nature, non-toxic.
[Therapeutic Actions] Stops dysentery (Tao Hongjing), treats yin sores, eliminates phlegm-fluid retention in the chest and heart (Chen Cangqi). Resolves phlegm, stops vomiting, treats acid regurgitation, heart pain, and sudden vomiting (Li Shizhen).
[Attached Prescriptions] One old prescription, two new prescriptions.
Sudden persistent cough: Use white clam shells, pounded into fine powder. Mix with cooked rice water for oral administration, one qian per dose, three times daily. Very effective. (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
Phlegm-wheezing and cough: Use white clam shells (preferably aged for many years), calcined to retain their properties, ground into an extremely fine powder. Administer one qian mixed with rice water, three times daily. (*Jijiu Fang*)
Regurgitation and vomiting of food: Use yellow clam shells and river snail shells (both selected from those long buried in mud), stir-fried until they turn into white ash. For every two liang of river snail shell ash, use one liang of yellow clam shell ash. Add four pieces of white plum flesh, mix and knead evenly into balls. Place inside a clay crucible, cover tightly, and seal with mud. Calcine to retain properties, then grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose, delivered with decoction of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Amomi Fructus Rotundus. Alternatively, taken with aged rice water is also acceptable. Whenever one feels abdominal distension and pain, signaling impending regurgitation, treat immediately with this medicine. (*Shizhai Baiyi Xuanfang*)
