[Classified as Upper Grade in the *Shennong Bencao Jing*]
**Names:** Tao Hongjing stated: "It is produced within honey, hence it is called Beeswax (Mifengla)."
Li Shizhen stated: "La" resembles a mane. Bees produce beeswax, forming structures akin to manes.
**Collection and Explanation:** The *Bie Lu* (Record of Famous Physicians) states: "Beeswax grows in the valleys of Wudu, among honeycombs, trees, and stones."
Tao Hongjing stated: "Bees first use this substance as a foundation for their nests; it is also obtained when boiling honey. Initially, it is extremely fragrant and soft. People boil and refine it again, or add a little vinegar and wine, turning it yellowish-red, which is ideal for making candles. Physicians nowadays all use white beeswax; simply shave it and expose it to the sun for about a hundred days in summer, and it will naturally turn white. If needed urgently, melt it and immerse it in water more than ten times, and it will also become white."
Cheng Cong stated: "Newly made wax is white but turns yellow with age. White beeswax is the essence of wax."
Li Shizhen stated: "Wax is actually the bottom of the honeycomb. After extracting honey, it is refined, filtered into water, and collected once solidified. The yellow-colored one is commonly known as Yellow Beeswax (Huangla); the one refined until extremely clean and white is White Beeswax (Baila). It is not that new wax is white and old wax is yellow. This differs from the insect-made white wax used today."
**Flavor and Properties:** Sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic.
Xu Zhicai stated: "It clashes with Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos) and Qige (likely Oyster Shell or similar)."
**Indications:**
**Honeycomb Wax (Mifengla):** Primarily treats dysentery with pus and blood, tonifies the Middle Jiao, heals severe injuries and traumatic wounds, benefits Qi, prevents hunger, and delays aging (*Shennong Bencao Jing*). Zhao Quan stated: "Mixed in equal parts with Songzhi (Pine Resin), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Zao Rou (Date Flesh), and Fuling (Poria), formed into pills. Taken after meals, 50 pills per dose, prevents hunger." Su Song stated: "In years of famine, ancients often ate wax to survive hunger; simply chewing it with large dates makes it easy to digest."
**White Beeswax (Baila):** Treats chronic diarrhea with tenesmus and discharge of white pus, tonifies severe injuries, and benefits children. Long-term consumption lightens the body and prevents hunger (*Bie Lu*). For pregnant women with fetal restlessness and continuous bleeding, nearing death: Take an amount the size of a chicken egg, boil for three to five boils, mix with half a sheng of fine wine, and drink. Recovery is immediate. It also treats white hair: pluck the white hairs, apply melted wax into the follicles, and black hair will regrow (Zhen Quan).
**Elucidation:** Li Shizhen stated: "Honey is derived from wax, yet among all things, nothing is sweeter than honey, and nothing is blander than wax. Does this not imply that what is concentrated here must be thin there? Honey's flavor and properties are both strong/yin, thus nourishing the Spleen; Wax's flavor and properties are both mild/yang, thus nourishing the Stomach. The concentrated type is sweet, has a slow nature and soft texture, thus moistening the Zang-Fu organs; the thin type is bland, has a restrictive nature and hard texture, thus stopping diarrhea and dysentery."
Zhang Zhongjing treated dysentery with Tiaoqi Yin; the *Qianjin Fang* treated dysentery with Jiaola Tang. Their effects are very rapid, likely based on this understanding. Furthermore, Hua Tuo treated young and old patients with dysentery who vomited immediately after eating. He used a prescription containing one cun-bi of White Beeswax, one chicken egg yolk, Shimii (Rock Sugar), Kujiu (Vinegar), Fa Hui (Hair Ash), and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) powder, each in the quantity of half a chicken egg. First, boil the honey, wax, vinegar, and egg yolk until uniform, then add Coptis and Hair Ash, simmer until pillable. Finish within two days; the effect is miraculous. I have used this formula many times with verified efficacy, confirming that the statement in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* regarding treating dysentery with pus and blood is indeed worthy of trust.
**Attached Prescriptions:** Eleven old prescriptions, ten new prescriptions.
**Zhongjing's Tiaoqi Yin:** Treats red and white dysentery, unbearable lower abdominal pain, tenesmus, or cases where the face turns blue and hands/feet change color. Use Sanqian (3 qian) of Yellow Beeswax and Sanqian of Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), melt together, and add Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) powder.
**Qianjin Fang's Jiaola Tang:** Treats heat dysentery and postpartum dysentery in women. Use two pieces of wax (size of chess pieces), Erqian (2 qian) of Ejiao, Erqianban (2.5 qian) of Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Sanqian (3 qian) of Huanglian, Yi qian (1 qian) of Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), and Bansheng (half sheng) of Chenlinmi (Aged Rice). Add Shengshui (3 sheng of water), boil rice until one sheng remains, remove rice, add herbs, decoct to one zhong, and take warm. Miraculous effect. (*Qianjin Fang*)
**Acute Heart Pain:** Melt Yellow Beeswax over a lamp, form pills the size of a Chinese chestnut, coat with Baicaoshuang (Soot from Hundred Herbs). Swallow three pills with well water.
**Lung Deficiency Cough:** Lixiao Wan (Instant Effect Pill). Treats lung deficiency with diaphragmatic heat, cough with shortness of breath, irritability, fullness, dry throat and mouth, desire for cold water, fatigue, emaciation, fever, loss of appetite, and hoarse voice. Use Baliang (8 liang) of Huangla (Yellow Beeswax) (melted, filtered clean, boiled in starch water), reform into 120 pills, coat with Siliang (4 liang) of Hafan (Clam Powder). Take one pill per dose with half a walnut, chew finely, and swallow with warm water. Lie down immediately after, keep mouth closed and silent. Twice daily. (*Puji Fang*)
**Liver Deficiency Nyctalopia (Night Blindness):** Huangla (Yellow Beeswax) in any amount. Melt and extract the juice, mix appropriately with Hafan (Clam Powder). Cut off Erqian (2 qian) per dose. Slice Erliang (2 liang) of Zhu Gan (Pig Liver), insert the medicine inside, tie tightly with hemp rope. Add Yi wan (one bowl) of water, cook together in a dingzi (metal pot) until done. Remove and steam the eyes while hot. When warm, eat the liver. Twice daily, continue until stable. Effect is miraculous. (*Jiyan Fang*)
**Head Wind Pulling Pain:** Prescription passed by Yan Situi, Yaya of Hunan. Use Er jin (2 jin) of wax and Ban jin (half jin) of salt. Melt together in a sieve until integrated. Mold into a helmet shape fitting the head. Place on the head extending to the forehead; pain stops immediately. (*Jingyan Fang*)
**Calf Cramps:** Liu Yuxi's *Chuanxin Fang*. Use Ban jin (half jin) of wax, melt it, and spread onto old silk fabric. According to the size and width of the affected area, wrap around the foot while hot, ensuring coverage of the sole. Wear socks to wrap it. Change when cold. Also apply to the palms of both hands. (*Tujing*)
**Wind Storm with Cold Body:** "Wind storm" refers to whole-body coldness resembling paralysis. Use the above method. Spread and apply according to the size and width of the affected area, wrapping hands and feet soles.
**Wind Toxicity with Palpitations:** Same method as above.
**Traumatic Wind-Dampness resembling Malaria:** Use one piece of Yellow Beeswax, dissolve in hot wine, and take orally. Immediate effect. [Text incomplete]

**Frostbite on Feet:** Apply thickly boiled Yellow Beeswax. (Yao Hezhong)
**Swelling and Pain from Fox Urine Scratch:** Apply hot wax to the wound and smoke it with tobacco/herb smoke until fluid exudes. Cure immediately. (*Zhouhou Fang*)
**Dog Bite Wound Infection:** Melt wax by heating and pour into the wound. (*Ge Shi Fang*)
**Snake Bite Poison:** Place a bamboo tube over the wound, melt wax, and pour it in. Effective. (*Xu Wang Fang*)
**Scald and Burn Wounds:** Redness, swelling, pain, toxic decay forming pus. Use this to draw out heat and toxicity, stop pain, and close the wound. Use Sizhang (4 liang) of Mayou (Sesame Oil) and Yi liang (1 liang) of Danggui (Angelica Sinensis). Fry until scorched, remove dregs. Add Yi liang (1 liang) of Huangla (Yellow Beeswax), stir until melted, cool, spread on cloth, and apply. Miraculous effect. (*Yilin Ji Yao*)
**Leg Ulcer:** Use branches of Peach, Willow, Locust, Toona, and Chinaberry (Wuzhi) decocted with Jingjie (Schizonepeta). Wash and wipe the wound clean. Spread raw Huangla (Yellow Beeswax) on oil paper, apply ten layers according to the wound size, secure with cloth. Wash every three days, removing one unused layer. Heal within one month. (*Yilin Ji Yao*)
**Pregnancy Spontaneous Abortion (Leaking Blood):** Yi liang (1 liang) of Huangla (Yellow Beeswax), one bowl of Laojiu (Aged Wine). Melt and take hot. Stops bleeding instantly. (*Yaoxing Lun*)
