[Names] Suanni (pronounced "Suan Ni". Written as "Suanni" in *Erya*), KT (pronounced "Xu Jiao Qie").
Li Shizhen said: The lion is the king of beasts, hence called Lion. KT imitates its sound. The *Fan Shu* (Sanskrit Books) calls it "Sengjia Bi". The *Shuowen Jiezi* states: It is also known as Baize (White Ze). However, consulting the *Ruiying Tu* (Illustrated Records of Auspicious Omens), Baize can speak, which is not the lion.
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen said: Lions originate from various Western Regions countries. They resemble tigers but are smaller, with yellow fur. They also resemble golden Naogou (a type of monkey-dog), but have large heads and long tails. Some are greenish-blue. They have copper-colored heads and iron foreheads, hooked claws and saw-like teeth, ears laid back and noses raised, eyes like lightning, and roars like thunder. They have long beards; males have hair as large as a dou (unit of measure), can run five hundred li per day, and are the leaders of hairy creatures. When angry, their majesty lies in their teeth; when pleased, their majesty lies in their tails.
Urine contains blood. The *Erya* says they eat tigers and leopards. Yu Shinan says they pull tigers and swallow pi (wild boars), split rhinos and divide elephants. Tao Hongjing says blowing at them causes feathers and down to fall. Xiong Taigu says if their milk enters the milk of cattle, sheep, or horses, it turns into water. Even after death... collecting their tails... physical mutual aversion is such. However, the *Bowuzhi* (Insects and Animals) records: Emperor Wu of Wei went to Baiye Lang Mountain and saw a creature... The *Tang History* records: During the reign of Emperor Gaozong, the Kingdom of Gaviya presented a Heavenly Iron Beast capable of capturing lions and elephants. Thus, regarding the lion... within seven days, take those with unopened eyes to train them; if slightly older, they become difficult to tame.
Feces
Li Shizhen said: Tao Hongjing, in his commentary on Suhexiang (Styrax), mistakenly identified it as lion feces. Chen corrected this error, stating that lion feces is extremely foul-smelling and dark red-black in color. This is investigated and supplemented here.
[Therapeutic Actions] Ingesting it breaks up old blood stasis and kills various insects. Burning it removes ghostly qi (Note by Zangqi).
