[Names] Li Shizhen stated: "Zhan" refers to its stickiness, and "Tang" refers to its appearance.
[Collected Explanations] Tao Hongjing stated: It originates from Jin'an and Cenzhou. The truly pure and authentic variety is difficult to obtain; it is often adulterated with tree bark and insect frass. Only the soft texture is considered superior.
It is an essential material for perfumers (those who compound incense) but is not formally used in herbal medicine.
Su Gong stated: The Zhan Tang tree resembles the citrus tree. The branches and leaves are decocted to produce a fragrance resembling dark brown sugar. It grows south of Jiaozhou and Guangzhou, specifically in Jin'an. Recent medical formulas frequently employ this substance.
Li Shizhen stated: Its flowers are also fragrant, with an aroma similar to jasmine (*Jasminum sambac*).
[Flavor and Properties] Bitter, slightly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Treats wind-water toxic swelling, expels evil qi and *fushi* (hidden pathogens/deadly spirits) (from *Bie Lu*). Treats *ehe* (malignant nodules) and malignant sores. When crushed together with walnuts and green tangerine peel (*Qingpi*), applied to the hair, it makes the hair black as lacquer (Li Shizhen).
[Appendix] Jiéshā Chen Cangqi stated: Jiéshā grows in Western Regions countries; it is the flower of a tree, extremely fragrant. Used together with walnut kernels to remove dandruff caused by wind-pathogen and promote hair growth.

[Names]
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: Du Nou Xiang (Agarwood/Oud resin variant) originates from Champa country; it is the resin of a tree. The tree resembles a pine in shape. As the tree ages, the resin overflows. The white, transparent variety is named Bai Du Nou (White Du Nou); it does not melt in midsummer and has a clear, distant fragrance. After collection, locals roast the tree with fire in summer to cause the resin to overflow again, which solidifies in winter for subsequent collection. This resin melts in summer and solidifies in winter. Stored in gourd scoops placed in cool, shaded areas, it prevents melting. Adulterated with tree bark, it turns black and is named Hei Du Nou (Black Du Nou), classified as the lower grade.
[Flavor and Properties] Missing
[Indications] Treats sallow complexion (*li*). Mixed in equal parts with *Baifuzi* (Arisaema cum Baccis), winter melon seeds, *Baiji* (Bletilla Rhizome), and pomegranate peel, ground into powder, soaked in wine for three days, and applied to the face after washing. Long-term use results in a face lustrous as jade (Li Shizhen).
[Appendix] Danba Xiang Li Shizhen stated: Danba trees grow in Jiaozhi and various Southern Fan countries. The tree resembles young osmanthus (*Osmanthus fragrans*). The leaves are fresh red, resembling frost-covered maple leaves. Its fruit is pressed for oil and compounded with other spices to repel foul odors.
