[Names] Daonzi (See below for details).
[Collected Explanations] Zang Qi stated: Du Bao's *Shiyilu* records that Dunianzi grows in the Lingnan region. During the reign of Emperor Yang of Sui, the tree grew over one zhang high, with leaves resembling those of the white poplar and slender branches. The flower center is golden, and the flowers are red like hibiscus (*Hibiscus mutabilis*) but larger. The fruit resembles a small date; when preserved in honey and eaten, it is sweet, delicious, and beneficial to the human body.
Li Shizhen stated: According to Liu Xun's *Lingbiao Luyi*, the Daonzi bush is not large, with leaves resembling those of bitter plum. The flowers resemble hibiscus but are smaller and deep purple; women in the southern regions often use them for dyeing. The fruit resembles a soft persimmon, purple on the outside and red inside, without seeds, with four leaf-like structures at the top resembling the calyx of a persimmon. It must be pinched by the calyx before eating. Hence it is called Daonzi (Inverted Pinching Fruit), which was later corrupted into Dunianzi. Its taste is very sweet and soft.
