(From *Bencao Shayi* / Supplement to Materia Medica)
Chen Cangqi stated: This is the fine powder ground by needle-makers. Only true steel sand is suitable for use; people often mix it with soft iron sand, flying it into powder, making it indistinguishable to others. It can also be used to dye silk black.
[Indications]
Its efficacy is similar to that of Iron Powder (Tiefen). Mixed with Myrobalan (Moshizi), it dyes hair and beard jet black (Chen Cangqi).
It eliminates accumulations, swelling, fullness, and jaundice; calms Liver Qi; and dissipates goiters (Li Shizhen).
[Prescriptions]
Ten new prescriptions included.
Rheumatic foot pain: Grind Needle Sand (Zhen Sha) and Chuan Wutou (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata) into powder, mix evenly, stir-fry until hot, wrap in cotton cloth, and apply as a hot compress (from *Zhai Xuan Fang*).
Wind-bi causing cold hands: Take four qian of Needle Sand (Zhen Sha), three qian of Sulfur (Liuhuang), and six qian of Black-footed White Alum (Bai Fan), grind into powder. Moisten with hot vinegar or water, wrap in oil paper, place in a bag, and hold in hand at will. Re-moisten when cold (from *Shengji Lu*).
Spleen labor-induced yellow disease: Take four qian of Needle Sand (Zhen Sha) (stir-fried seven times with vinegar), two qian of Dried Lacquer (Ganxi) (burned to retain its nature), three qian of Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), and five qian of Pingwei San, grind into fine powder. Make pills the size of wu-tong seeds using steamed bread paste. Take with any decoction (from *Zhai Xuan Fang*).
Needle Sand Pill (Zhen Sha Wan) for damp-heat yellow sores, aiding the Spleen and removing dampness: Use an arbitrary amount of Needle Sand (Zhen Sha), grind off all rust, wash until white. Soak in rice vinegar in an iron pot to a depth of one finger, stir-fry until dry, then stir-fry three to five more times until red-hot, then remove. Take half sheng of aged Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Germen), soak in water overnight, pound into powder, form into blocks, cook until half-done, pound until mushy. Add two and a half liang of Needle Sand (Zhen Sha) and one and a half liang of Baicaoshuang (Carbonized Herba Artemisiae Argyi), pound a thousand times, make pills the size of wu-tong seeds. Take fifty pills each time, washed down with wine infused with Acanthopanacis Cortex (Wujia Pi), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi Gen), and Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua). If diarrhea occurs upon initial intake, it indicates the source of the disease is being expelled (from *Qiankun Shengyi*).
Edema with oliguria: Take three qian each of Needle Sand (Zhen Sha) (boiled in vinegar and stir-fried dry), Polyporus (Zhuling), and Pheretima (Dishilong). Grind into powder, mix with juice of Allium fistulosum (Congxian) to form a paste, apply to the umbilicus about one cun thick, bind firmly. Continue until urine output increases significantly. Change twice daily. Adding Kansui (Gansui) is even better (from *Desheng Tang Fang*).
Unremitting diarrhea, unresponsive to various medicines: Same prescription as above, but do not use Gansui (from *Yixue Zhengchuan*).
Deficiency-cold dysentery with intestinal slipping and incontinence: Take seven and a half qian of Needle Sand (Zhen Sha), one qian of Guigui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and one qian of Ku Fan (Alumen). This method is named "Yu Bao Du" (from *Ren Cun Fang*).
Neck goiter (Qi Ying): Soak Needle Sand (Zhen Sha) in a water vat. Use this water for drinking and cooking. Replace the sand every ten days. It will naturally dissipate after half a year (Yang Renzhai, *Zhizhi Fang*).
Dyeing white hair and beard: Take one liang of Needle Sand (Zhen Sha) (stir-fried seven times with vinegar), four qian each of Hezi and Baiji, six qian of Baiyaojian, and two qian of Lüfan.
