Li Shizhen said: The five-colored lingzhi are matched with the five flavors of the Five Elements; this is likely based on theoretical reasoning, and their flavors may not necessarily follow their colors. Just as among the five domestic animals, sheep belong to Fire, and among the five fruits, apricots correspond to the Heart, both are described as having a bitter flavor.
Xu Zhicai said: For the six types of lingzhi—green, red, yellow, white, black, and purple—*Dioscoreae Rhizoma* (Shanyao, 山药) serves as the guiding herb. It enhances efficacy when combined with *Cannabis Semen* (Huomaren, 火麻仁), *Benincasae Semen* (Baiguazi, 白瓜子), and *Cinnamomi Ramulus* (Mugui, 牡桂), which are very beneficial to humans. It is incompatible with *Picrorhizae Rhizoma* (Changshan, 常山), and fears *Azurite* (Bianqing, 扁青) and *Artemisiae Capillaris Herba* (Yinchenhao, 茵陈蒿).
