(Léi, lěi two pronunciations. *Shennong Bencao Jing* [Divine Farmer's Materia Medica])
[Correction] Rodents were originally in the Beast section; now, based on *Erya* and *Shuowen Jiezi*, they are moved to the Bird section.
[Names] Shu (Rodent) (*Shennong Bencao Jing*), Wushu (Flying Squirrel) (*Erya*), Ershu (Ear Mouse) (*Shanhaijing*), Yiyu (*Erya*), [Feisheng Niao] (*Qinjing*), Feisheng Niao (Flying Birth Bird) (Tao Hongjing).
Li Shizhen says: According to Xu Shen's *Shuowen Jiezi*: "[It is] a bird shaped like a mouse, capable of flying and walking, and viviparous." Hence the character includes the "bird" radical, also named Feisheng. *Shennong Bencao Jing* calls it a mouse due to its similar shape. This creature has flesh wings connected to its tail; it cannot fly upwards and falls easily, thus called Feisheng Niao. Colloquially, foolish people are referred to as [this term], deriving meaning from this. It is also called Wushu, sharing the name with the mole cricket.
[Collected Explanations] *Mingyi Bielu* [Additional Records of Famous Physicians] states: [Feisheng Niao] grows in mountainous areas and flat valleys.
Tao Hongjing says: This mouse is the Wushu (Feisheng Niao). It resembles a bat, is as large as an owl or kite, has dark purple fur, and is nocturnal, flying and viviparous. People collect its skin and fur and hold it for parturient women to facilitate childbirth.
Su Song says: It is abundant in the mountains of Huguang and Lingnan today. Southerners see it and often find it strange.
Kou Zongshi says: It is very common in the mountains west of the pass. The fur is extremely dense; it can only fly downwards, not far. People catch it for its skin to make warm hats.
Li Shizhen says: According to Guo Pu's annotation of *Erya*: "Wushu resembles a small fox, has flesh wings and four feet like a bat. The fur on the wings, tail, neck, and flanks is purple-red; the back is grey-green mugwort color; the belly is yellow; the snout and chin are mixed white. Short legs, long claws, tail about three chi long. It flies and gives birth to young, which immediately follow the mother. Its sound is like human calling; it eats fire smoke. It can fly from high to low, but not from low to high. It likes to cry at night. *Shanhaijing* says: 'Ershu resembles a mouse, has a rabbit head and deer body, and flies using its tail.' Eating it prevents dizziness and protects against hundred poisons. This is that animal. Its form, wings connect four feet and tail, same as bats, hence said to fly by tail. Those born in Lingnan like to eat longan."
[Properties and Flavor] Slightly warm, toxic.
[Indications] Induces abortion, facilitates easy delivery (*Shennong Bencao Jing*).
[Elucidation] Su Song says: People collect its skin and fur for parturient women; holding it during labor facilitates easy birth. However, *Duanju Fang* [Short Drama Formula] incorporates it into medicinal preparations, using [its underbelly fur etc.].
Li Shizhen says: [Feisheng Niao] can fly and give birth viviparously; therefore, sleeping on its skin or carrying its claws can induce labor, due to sympathetic resonance of nature. *Jisheng Fang* [Prescriptions for Saving Lives] treats difficult labor with Jin Ye Wan [Golden Liquid Pill], using its underbelly fur made into pills for ingestion.
