[Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix)]
The thermal nature is warm. The flavor is pungent. It is non-toxic. It mainly treats leukorrhea with red or white discharge in women, amenorrhea, swelling of the external genitalia accompanied by aversion to cold and fever, tearing caused by head wind invading the eyes, promotes muscle growth, moistens and brightens the complexion, and can be used as a facial cosmetic paste.
Bai Zhi has a warm thermal nature, inheriting the mild wood qi of spring, and enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its pungent, non-toxic, and aromatic flavor corresponds to the dry metal flavor of the West, entering the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian and the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Both its aroma and flavor are ascending, which belongs to Yang. The reason it treats leukorrhea with red or white discharge in women is that the Liver governs Wind, and the Spleen governs Dampness. When Wind-Dampness sinks downward, it results in red or white vaginal discharge. Bai Zhi enters the Liver to disperse Wind, and its aromatic property dries Dampness; thus, it treats this condition. The Liver stores Blood. Cold congealing in the Blood causes Qi stagnation and amenorrhea. By warming and dispersing Cold, it treats blood closure. "Yin" refers to the penis in men and the vaginal introitus in women, belonging to the Jueyin Liver. Swelling accompanied by aversion to cold and fever is due to Wind-Dampness in the Liver Meridian; excess Dampness causes swelling. Bai Zhi enters the Liver Meridian; its Pungency disperses Wind, and its Warmth moves Dampness; therefore, it treats this condition. The Liver Meridian converges with the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) at the vertex. Wind Qi connects with the Liver, and the Liver opens into the Eyes. Head wind invading the eyes causing tearing occurs because Liver Wind disrupts the diffusing and descending functions. It treats this because its Pungent-Warm nature disperses Wind. The Stomach governs the skin and flesh, and its meridian runs over the face. Pungent-Warm properties benefit the Stomach, thus promoting skin and flesh growth. Aromatic and Pungent-Moistening properties brighten the complexion. Using it as a facial paste is merely a secondary effect of moisturizing the complexion.
Prescription Formulation:
When combined with Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), it promotes muscle growth. Combined with Xin Yi (Magnoliae Flos) and Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), it treats nasal disorders. Combined with Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Dou Chi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), named Shen Bai San (Divine White Powder), it treats all types of Shang Han (Cold Damage). Decocted with Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus) using wine, it treats early-stage Ru Yong (Breast Abscess). Combined with Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), and Jiao Mi (Carbonized Rice), it treats leakage due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency.
[Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix / Gaoben)]
The thermal nature is warm. The flavor is pungent. It is non-toxic. It mainly treats Shan Jia (hernia-like masses) in women, cold pain and swelling in the external genitalia, abdominal urgency, eliminates head wind pain, promotes skin and flesh growth, and beautifies the complexion.
Gaoben has a warm thermal nature, inheriting the ascending wood qi of spring, and enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its pungent, non-toxic flavor corresponds to the metal flavor of the West on earth, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Both its aroma and flavor are ascending, which belongs to Yang. Women are primarily governed by Blood, which is stored in the Liver. When Liver Blood is insufficient, Liver Qi becomes stagnant, leading to the formation of Shan Jia (masses). Gaoben is Warm and Pungent; Warmth moves Qi, and Pungency moistens Blood. With unobstructed Qi and sufficient Blood, Shan Jia naturally resolves. The Jueyin Meridian networks the genital organs, and the Jueyin Sinews knot at the genital organs. Gaoben treats cold pain and swelling in the genitalia by entering the Liver and using its Pungent-Warm nature to disperse Cold. The Jueyin Meridian reaches the lower abdomen. The Liver's nature is urgent; abdominal urgency occurs due to lack of Blood nourishment. Gaoben's Pungent flavor moistens Blood, thus treating this condition. Wind Qi connects with the Liver, and the Liver Meridian converges with the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) at the vertex. When Wind Evil ascends, it causes headache. Gaoben treats this because Pungency disperses it. The Lung governs the skin and hair, promoting skin and flesh growth; the Pungent flavor benefits the Lung Qi. Beautifying the complexion is the result of the Pungent flavor's ability to moisten Blood.

Combined with Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), it treats headaches due to Cold stagnation in the Taiyang Meridian. Combined with Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), it can be used as a facial cosmetic paste.
