Euryale Seed (Qianshi): Qi is neutral, taste is astringent. Flavor is sweet, non-toxic. Mainly treats damp-bi (joint pain and heaviness caused by dampness pathogen). Pain in the lower back, spine, and knees. Tonifies the middle jiao. Eliminates sudden diseases. Benefits essence and qi. Strengthens willpower. Makes the ears sharp and eyes bright. Long-term use makes the body light, prevents hunger, delays aging, and resembles immortality. (Stir-fried)
Euryale seed has neutral and astringent qi, inheriting the metal qi of autumnal gathering, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sweet flavor and non-toxic nature derive from the central earth taste of the earth, entering the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. The descending effect of its aroma and flavor exceeds the ascending, belonging to Yin. The Spleen is damp-earth and governs blood. When dampness pathogen attacks the lower part, it flows to the waist, spine, and knees, causing blood stasis and resulting in bi syndrome. Euryale seed is sweet and neutral, thus benefiting the Spleen and Lungs. When Lung qi is unobstructed, water passages flow freely, and dampness moves; when Spleen qi harmonizes, blood circulates, and bi syndrome heals. "Middle" refers to the Spleen; sweet flavor tonifies the Spleen, hence it can tonify the middle. Sudden diseases often belong to Fire. Substances that are the essence of Water can often suppress Fire. Euryale seed's sweet flavor belongs to Earth but grows in Water, so it controls Fire and treats sudden diseases. The Kidney stores Essence; the Lung is Metal and the Kidney is Water. Neutral qi benefits the Lung; when Lung qi is prosperous, it generates Essence, following the principle of Metal generating Water. Sweet flavor benefits the Spleen; Spleen qi ascends. Neutral qi benefits the Lung; Lung qi descends. When ascending and descending are coordinated, Heaven is clear and Earth is peaceful. Nourished with great strength, the will becomes strong. Sweet flavor benefits the Spleen; the Spleen governs blood. The eyes become bright when nourished by blood; the ears become sharp when nourished by blood. Hence, it makes the ears sharp and eyes bright. Long-term use: neutral qi benefits the Lung; abundant Lung qi makes the body light. Sweet flavor benefits the Spleen; abundant Spleen blood delays aging and prevents hunger. With sufficient Lung and Spleen qi and blood, the state of immortality naturally arrives.
Prescription Formulation:
Euryale seed combined with *Chun Yuan Zi* (Chinese Cornelian Cherry Fruit) pills tonifies deficiency of the Lower Origin. Combined with Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Qiu Shi (Mineral Salt), Lian Rou (Lotus Plumule), and Zao Rou (Jujube Flesh) pills, it treats frequent urination and seminal emission.
Papaya (Mu Gua): Temperature is warm, taste is sour, non-toxic. Mainly treats damp-bi, Hong Kong Jiao (foot disease/beriberi), Huo Luan (cholera-like syndrome with severe vomiting and diarrhea), and continuous muscle cramps (tetany).
Papaya has warm temperature, inheriting the gentle wood qi of spring. Its sour taste and non-toxic nature derive from the eastern wood taste of the earth. Warm temperature rises and spreads; sour taste converges and astringes. Straight and curved; curvature and straightness define Wood. It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. The descending effect of its aroma and flavor exceeds the ascending, belonging to Yin. The Liver governs sinews. Dampness injures sinews; sinew contraction leads to bi. Papaya's warmth disperses dampness; its sourness relaxes sinews. Hence, it mainly treats damp-bi. Hong Kong Jiao is caused by dampness invading the Liver collaterals. Sourness nourishes the Liver; warmth disperses dampness. Hence, it also treats this condition. In Huo Luan with severe vomiting and diarrhea and continuous tetany, the Liver belongs to Wood. Wood pathogen overacts on Earth (Spleen/Stomach), causing upper vomiting and lower purging. The Liver governs sinews; heat in sinews causes shortening and tetany. Papaya enters Earth to drain Wood. When Wood is balanced, sinews relax naturally. Hence, it treats this condition.
Prescription Formulation:
Papaya combined with Sang Pi (Mulberry Bark) and Da Zao (Jujube) treats Huo Luan with tetany. Combined with Dang Gui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Body), Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root), Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Xu Duan (Teasel Root), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), and Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), it treats tetany due to Blood deficiency.
Combined with Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanax Bark), Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Bi Xie (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome), and Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark), it treats Hong Kong Jiao. Ground into fine powder, it treats Yang Mei Jie Du (chancre toxicity/syphilitic lesions).
