[Flavor and Efficacy]
Warm in temperature. Pungent in flavor. Non-toxic. Primarily treats wind-cold-damp bi syndrome (pain and numbness of limbs caused by invasion of wind, cold, and damp pathogens). Cough with rebellious qi (coughing and wheezing with upward rushing of qi). Opens the heart orifices, tonifies the five zang organs. Unblocks the nine orifices (the seven orifices of the head plus the two lower orifices). Clarifies the eyes and ears. Enables speech. Treats deafness. Carbuncles and sores. Warms the stomach and intestines. Stops frequent urination. Long-term use makes the body light and agile. Prevents forgetfulness. Prevents confusion and bewilderment. Extends lifespan. Benefits mind and intelligence. Elevates aspirations. Delays aging. (Steamed)
[Properties, Meridian Tropism, and Mechanism Analysis]
Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) is warm in temperature. It inherits the mild wood qi of spring from heaven. It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its pungent flavor is non-toxic. It obtains the metal flavor of the west from earth. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Both its flavor and temperature are ascending, belonging to Yang. Wind, cold, and dampness combine to form Bi syndrome. In Bi syndrome, both qi and blood are obstructed. Shichangpu enters the Liver; the Liver stores blood. It enters the Lung; the Lung governs qi. The warm temperature can move qi, and the pungent flavor can moisten. Therefore, it treats these conditions. Pungency moistens the Lung; when the Lung is moistened, qi descends, and cough with rebellious qi naturally calms down. Pungent-warm belongs to Yang; Yang governs development and opening, thus it opens the heart orifices. Pungency moistens the Lung, which governs qi; warmth harmonizes the Liver, which stores blood. When qi and blood are harmonized, all five zang organs are tonified. Unblocking the nine orifices is due to the developing nature of pungent-warm. Pungent-warm belongs to Yang; yang qi emerges from the upper orifices, thus clarifying the eyes and ears. The Lung governs voice; pungency moistens the Lung, thus enabling speech. Treating deafness is a manifestation of the function of clarifying the eyes and ears. Treating carbuncles and sores is because pungency can dissipate nodules. The stomach and intestines belong to the Foot and Hand Yangming Meridians; pungent-warm belongs to Yang; when yang qi is abundant, the stomach and intestines become warm. If the Bladder is cold, urinary incontinence occurs. Shichangpu is pungent-warm; it warms the Lung; the Lung is the upper source of the Bladder, thus stopping frequent urination. Long-term use makes the body light because the Liver qi flows smoothly and freely. Not forgetting and not being confused is because yang qi is abundant and spiritual brightness is maintained. Extending lifespan is because abundance of yang leads to longevity. Benefiting mind and intelligence, elevating aspirations is because pungent-warm belongs to Yang; Yang governs high and bright qualities. Delaying aging is because warmth invigorates blood circulation; when blood is abundant, the complexion becomes radiant.
