[Bu Gu Zhi] (Psoraleae Fructus)
The Qi is greatly warm. The taste is pungent. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats Wu Lao Qi Shang (five labors and seven injuries, referring to various chronic deficiency syndromes), wind-induced deficiency-cold, bone marrow injury and degeneration, kidney cold with seminal emission, and spontaneous abortion due to blood and qi deficiency in women. (Processed with salt water.)
Bu Gu Zhi has a greatly warm Qi, inheriting the fire Qi of the Heavenly Yangming channels. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel. Its taste is pungent and non-toxic, obtaining the metal flavor of the Earthly West. It enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Channel. Its color is black and its shape resembles the kidney, so it enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel. Both its Qi and taste are ascending, which belongs to Yang. The reason it treats Wu Lao Qi Shang is that the labor of the five zang organs, as well as the injuries caused by the seven factors—diet, worry, drinking, sexual intercourse, hunger, fatigue, and disorders of the meridians, Ying, and Wei—damage the True Qi of both the Pre-Heaven (Innate) and Post-Heaven (Acquired) foundations. Bu Gu Zhi tonifies the kidney, supplementing True Yang to generate Earth (Fire generates Earth), connecting the Pre-Heaven and Post-Heaven. This allows for the rotting and cooking of food and fluids into essence and subtle nutrients, thereby warming those who are labored and benefiting those who are injured. Regarding wind-deficiency-cold, pathogenic wind enters due to deficiency, resulting in cold syndromes. It treats this because its pungent-warm nature can disperse wind and dispel cold. The Kidney governs bones; bone marrow injury and degeneration are due to Kidney deficiency and cold. Since the Kidney is deficient and cold, Qi is insufficient to secure the essence, leading to spontaneous seminal emission. Bu Gu Zhi warms and benefits Yang Qi, and its pungency can moisten the marrow, thus treating these conditions. Regarding women's blood and Qi disorders, this refers to blood deficiency and cold Qi in women. Bu Gu Zhi warms the Lung; the Lung governs Qi and serves as the source of transformation for body fluids, thus treating blood deficiency and cold Qi. The fetus is held up by the Great Qi. Bu Gu Zhi is pungent and warm; warmth can invigorate blood, and pungency can disperse Qi. When blood and Qi circulate and disperse freely, it leads to spontaneous abortion.
