[Curcuma Longa Rhizome (Yujin)]
Qi is cold. Flavor is pungent and bitter. Non-toxic. Primarily treats blood accumulation (blood stasis forming masses). Directs Qi downward. Promotes tissue regeneration and stops bleeding. Breaks down malignant blood (stagnant blood). Treats strangury with blood (painful urination with blood) and hematuria. Treats metal wounds (traumatic injuries caused by sharp objects).
Curcuma Longa Rhizome has a cold Qi, inheriting the water Qi of winter from nature, entering the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian (Hand-Taiyang Cold Water Small Intestine Channel). Its flavor is pungent and bitter, non-toxic, acquiring the flavors of Metal and Fire from the earth, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. The descending aspect of its Qi and flavor exceeds the ascending aspect; it belongs to Yin. The Heart governs Blood, and the Lung governs Qi. Bitter flavor breaks Blood, and cold Qi directs Qi downward; thus, it primarily treats blood accumulation and directs Qi downward. When a wound is hot, it rots and bleeds; applying Curcuma Longa Rhizome as a powder externally can promote tissue regeneration and stop bleeding. "Breaking malignant blood" refers to the efficacy of bitter flavor breaking blood accumulation. Its treatment of strangury with blood and hematuria stems from its entry into the Small Intestine Meridian, utilizing its bitter-cold ability to clear heat from the blood. Because it promotes tissue regeneration and stops bleeding, it also treats metal wounds.
Prescription:
Curcuma Longa Rhizome combined with Chinese Chive (Jiucai), Aquilaria Wood (Xiangjiao), Angelica Sinensis Root (Guishen), Rehmannia Glutinosa Raw Root (Shengdi), and Child's Urine (Tongbian) treats hematemesis and epistaxis (nosebleed). Combined with Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), it treats hemorrhage caused by Yang Toxin.
[Tussilage Flower (Kuandonghua)]
Qi is warm. Flavor is pungent. Non-toxic. Primarily treats cough with rebellious Qi rising upward. Effectively treats asthma. Obstruction of the throat (Houbi - sore throat with swelling and difficulty swallowing/breathing). Various types of convulsions and epilepsy. Pathogenic factors of cold and heat.
Tussilage Flower has a warm Qi, inheriting the mild Wood Qi of spring from nature, entering the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its flavor is pungent, non-toxic, acquiring the moistening Metal flavor of the West from the earth, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Both its Qi and flavor are ascending; it belongs to Yang. The Lung Metal governs Qi; when Qi rebels, Fire attacks Metal, resulting in cough with rebellious Qi, upward rushing, and asthma. It treats these conditions because its pungent flavor moistens the Lung, and its warm Qi promotes circulation, allowing the descending function of Lung Metal to resume, thereby calming all symptoms. Houbi is caused by Fire pathogen knotting in the throat leading to obstruction. The throat also belongs to the Lung; Tussilage Flower is pungent and warm, unblocking Lung Qi, thus treating Houbi as well. Regarding various convulsions, epilepsy, and cold/heat pathogens, convulsions have distinctions of deficiency and excess, and epilepsy varies by the five Zang organs, making categories diverse; thus, pathogens also differ in cold and heat. It treats these because although pathogens differ in cold and heat, they all belong to syndromes of Jueyin Liver Wood Qi rebellion and Fire flaring. Tussilage Flower is pungent and warm; warmth can reach the Liver, and pungency can direct Qi downward. When Qi descends, Fire calms, and pathogens recede.
Prescription:
Tussilage Flower combined with Ephedra Herb (Mahuang), Apricot Seed (Xingren), Mulberry Bark (Sangpi), and Licorice Root (Gancao) treats asthma caused by Cold stagnation. Decocted with Lily Bulb (Baihe) into an ointment, named Hundred Flowers Ointment (Baihua Gao), it treats cough with phlegm accompanied by hemoptysis.
